Parasite Eve Review
Parasite Eve is very different from other Squaresoft Games. Parasite Eve is about an NYPD cop named Aya Brea, who has a mysterious connection with a woman who caused many deaths due to spontaneous combustion.

I would have to say Square didn't do as well with this game as they did with others. To begin on a positive note, the graphics weren't too bad, especially the FMV sequences. The graphics were made up of 3D figures running around on a 2D background, much like Final Fantasy VII.

Listening to the soundtrack of Parasite Eve is not exactly that pleasing. Then again, it's not annoying. This is because throughout half the game there is no music! And the times there is music, it isn't exactly Nobuo Uematsu. Of course, you can't expect that much from every Square game.

The best feature of Parasite Eve is the ability to modify weapons. There isn't too much to do to them, but you can still enhance your worst gun. The worst feature is Aya's walking speed. It takes her five minutes to walk across an office cubicle. Perhaps not that slow, but I think you get the general idea. Parasite Eve is probably not the game for you if you hate the real time battle system mixed with an ATB bar. At least you have the ability to avoid enemy attacks, although that is sometimes impossible. Speaking of battles, they are NOT random. There are certain points in the game which you will ALWAYS get attacked. It is possible to sometimes get around these points. That is actually kind of disturbing not encountering enemies. Takes away a lot of the challenge.

I would have to say that the concept of the game is pretty cool though. A situation in New York where you go from museum to hospital killing giant monsters is kind of fun. Parasite Eve is as close as you are going to get to a Square survival horror. It does, on the other hand, somewhat suffer when it comes to a storyline. I would like to describe it as "linear," meaning simplistic. There are no subquests or anything, just hunt down Eve and save the world. Some people may prefer this. Once you beat the game though, you have access to the Chrystler Building. Or in other words, several floors of tough enemies, bosses, and terror. It is the ultimate Parasite Eve challenge.

Parasite Eve would probably fall under the category of sub par, but there are people who really did enjoy this game. I suggest renting it before buying it, to see whether you like it or not. Hopefully my views will change after playing the sequel.
