Colonization DOS (ColDOS)
posted by CivPartisan at Tue, 19 September 2006 09:023:01

Colonization arrived on the scene in 1994. Some thought when this game arrived that it was the sequel to Sid Meier's  Original Civilization game, now dubbed Civilization I. Players quickly found however, that this game sported an entirely new game engine and it played more like a scenario than a full fledged game. Not that this game has any short play period--a well, thought out Colonization game can easily last for hours or end very quickly if you don't think. Unlike Civilization's success, Colonization went unrecognized as it did not attract the typical Civilization player. This was probably because of the release of CivNet and in the following year a release of Civilization II. Firaxis, the new company Sid Meier now launches new titles may some day produce a Colonization II. For now, we must be content with what we've got.

System Requirements

  • 80386/486 CPU
  • DOS 3.3 - 6.22
  • 640K Ram
  • Mouse recommended
  • 1x CDROM (optional for CD media)
  • Supports Adlib, Pro Audio Spectrum / Plus / 16, Roland MT-32 (and LAPC-1), Sound Blaster

The game begins with the discovery of the Americas (around 1500) by the four Dominant European countries of the time: English, Dutch, French and Spanish. You have continues until approximately the time of the American Revolution (around 1800). You are given a trading/exploration ship and a small group of colonists to begin the game. You must explore the American continent enough to find a suitable spot to begin your first colony. The larger your colonies grow, it is  inevitable that you will encounter native populations and competing imperialist powers. It takes a keen mind to balance military might and the necessities of pioneer living. You must choose your strategy early on and stick to it, yet there are times when you must be adaptable. Eventually, you must become self-sufficient and militarily powerful enough to declare your "War of Independence."

Note: Playable maps and Scenarios were not included in the early DOS Colonization game. Numerous fans over the years who played later versions of Colonization were pleased to hear that the Windows version came with a map editor. Very few downloads or addons are available.
