Pele's League Week 9 Review - October
29th As we pass mid-season in Pele's League, the Sao Paulo 55ers is the league's best team. They've lost only once so far. In this Week 9, they continue their good season, as they defeated the Cortland, NY Gradams Greats, 68-31.5, thanks to the Broncos D (21 points) and RB Terrell Davis (15 points). 55ers' QB Steve Young continues to impress, too, with 16 points. The Gradams Greats (3-6) are now in ninth place, while the 55ers are at the top with a 8-1 record. The Ithaca Isolators won for the third time in a row, defeating the PIMP C's REAL G's, 61-50. The Isolators (7-2) have the league's best attack, 4.5 points ahead of the 55ers in total points scored. Their "Raider Attack" keeps going: George and Kaufman played very well this week, as did the Raiders Defense. The REAL G's (4-5) played well, thanks to RB Raymont Harris and K Richie Cunningham. But they couldn't reach the hot Isolators, who are now tied for second place, while the REAL G's are in the fifth position. The Sao Paulo Hard Plays dropped only their second game of the season, but in an embarrassing way, as they lost to the league's worst team, the Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos, 48-32. The Golpes Baixos (2-7) have to thank QB Brett Favre (and his 21 points scored) for the win, only their second of the season. The Hard Plays (7-2) suffered from bad games by RB Curtis Martin and QB Brad Johnson. They're now tied for second with the Isolators, while the Golpes Baixos are still at the very bottom of the standings. After a big slump, the Sao Paulo CCM finally found the way to the winning track, as they beat the San Juan Coquis in a very close finish, 36-34. More important, they got this win even though coach Leandro Royer did not make lineup changes due to bye and injuries, starting three players that did not play in Week 9. The Coquis (3-6) tried to come from behind, hoping RB Karim Abdul-Jabbar could lift them on Monday, but they came up two points short. Both teams are tied for 6th in the standings. And the Randolph Blue Devils defeated the Oporto Eagles, 43-28. The Devils (3-6) were led by 15 points from QB Mark Brunell, giving them their third win of the season, and putting them in a tie for 6th place. The Eagles (5-4) have now dropped two in row, this time thanks to a huge struggle by almost everyone in the lineup. They're now at fourth place in the standings.
