Football '97 ESPN's Global Football League Week 9 Review -
Thursday, October 30th Screaming Meanies 54 vs. 44 Sao Paulo Travelers The biggest game of the week ended with a ten point victory for the Screaming Meanies over the Sao Paulo Travelers. RB Terrell Davis led the way for the Meanies (7-2), while Travelers' QB John Elway minus-2 performance put the game out of reach. The Meanies lead the East, while the Travelers (5-4) are tied for first in the West. The Meanies not only have the best record in GFL, but they're also the hottest team in the league, winning their last three games and getting very close to clinch a playoff spot. In a remarkable comeback, the New York Freaky Fat Cats managed to get a draw against the Sao Paulo Big Passaros, 38-38, thanks to a bad game by Passaros' QB Drew Bledsoe (3 INT), and mostly to a great effort by Cats' Defense of the Green Bay Packers, scoring 14 points in a late come from behind to tie on Monday Night. The Passaros (5-3-1) are second and the "King of the Draw" Cats (3-4-2) are fourth, both being in the Eastern Division. The Bloody Sabbaths got an upset victory over the New London Wacker Boyz II, 51-40, a win that gives them more hopes of stealing a playoff berth from the division top three teams. QB Kordell Stewart and RB Napoleon Kaufman played very well for the Sabbaths (3-5-1), while K Al Del Greco and the Panthers Defense put up some good numbers for the Boyz (5-4), but they fell short. Even then, they're still tied for first, while the Sabbaths are in fourth position, Western Division. The Lounge Lizards lost to the Crown City Thorns, giving them now a two game losing streak. This week, they forgot (?) to change the lineup, starting a bye week player in WR Keyshawn Johnson of the Jets. They got smashed by the Thorns (5-4), who benefited by WR Joey Galloway 25 point performance. The battle of the league's two worst teams was an exciting one, as the Da Kine Hawaiian pulled a two point victory over the Kauai Rainbows, in a game that was only decided on Monday Night. The difference for the Hawaiian (3-6) was K Olindo Mare, as his three points scored was the real difference in the game. The Rainbows (2-7) played very well, as they were down big after Sunday's games, and managed to get within close on Monday, thanks to Favre and Jabbar. But they couldn't avoid their seventh defeat, third straight.
