Heralds: some say that they are the inspiration of the greatest nation on Velgarth. They are the essence behind all that makes Valdemar unique: the gifts bestowed upon a dying king by higher entities.

A Herald is a special, often Gifted individual Chosen by a Companion. A Companion is a spirit who has taken the form of a great white horse with sky blue eyes. Companions were sent in answer to King Valdemar's pleas, who had begged for some way to make certain his country would always remain in just and fair hands. In response, the entities sent him three magnificently white horses. But they were far from horses- they were spirits that Chose three truehearted individuals to become the first Heralds, the most trusted group of individuals in the kingdom.  They are assumed to be less corruptible, as they have spirits accessing their thoughts at all times.

Heralds are Chosen by Companions, who then take them to the Herald's Collegium in Haven, where they are rigorously trained for their duties, as well as for control of gifts - including mind magic, firestarting, fetching, farsight, foresight, or mage gift. A Herald may be powerfully Gifted or not Gifted at all, but there is one thing all have in common: they possess noble hearts and a desire to strive for the betterment Valdemar and its people.

A Herald is never truly off duty. They ride Circuits when they earn their Whites. On these Circuits they perform an innumerable roster of duties; they act as investigators and utilize the Truth-spell in trials. They comb the countryside for danger, protecting civilians and dispersing justice. Constantly on the lookout for problems, they weed out corrupted individuals who hinder true justice. When a town is in need of a helping hand, a Herald is obliged to lend that hand. Companions hold unrivaled endurance and speed, making Heralds vital for running urgent messages.  They also spy, scout, fight, and use their Gifts for the protection, benefit, and betterment of the people of Valdemar, among many other things. Like members of the other Collegiums, they continuously put their lives at risk for the protection of all that Valdemar stands for. Full Heralds wear pure, startling white clothing, while Trainees wear grays.
