SpringTime Pinwheel Quilt

Pinwheel quilt This was one of my "spring" projects.   In this picture it doesn't have a border yet.  I don't think I planned this one very well, because it's a little busy.  I should have used sashes, but when I laid it out on my computer quilt drafting program, it looked fine.  Oh, well, the room that I planned this for has changed color schemes, anyway.  I really don't think violet and yellow florals will go well in a red, white, and blue Americana bedroom! I machine pieced this top in 1999, and it stayed as it was in that picture, shamefully pinned to the wall with push pins.

I always assumed I would machine quilt it, but in January of 2001, I finally decided I should learn hand quilting. I had made a few quilted pillows for practice, and this quilt was conveniently ready to be finished! I put on borders, layered and basted it with Polyfil Traditional polyester batting, and hand quilted 1/4" inside the triangles. It was a nightmare! I learned to hand quilt with a size 10 needle, and that is still my preferred size. I had to switch to a 9, because the seam allowances were pressed any which way and this made it very difficult to stitch! I now know to be careful with seam allowances if I plan to hand quilt.

I used DMC quilting thread in lilac and mustard thread. Switching the colors for each fabric was fun, and I think the DMC thread is very pretty. It is a cotton polyester blend thread, so I wouldn't use it for a cotton quilt intended to be an heirloom.

The quilt finished at about 30x50 inches.

Here's a detailed picture of the block...
