Christmas Stockings

I made these out of cotton, they are fully lined, and they are quilted with cotton batting inside! Alex's stocking is quilted in a cross hatch design, and Katie's is simply diagonal channel quilting. The appliques were cut from felt and appliqued with my machine's applique or blanket stitch. I embellished them further with decorative stitches, like the gingerman's face, and veins on the holly leaves. The cuff is also felt, and I embroidered the names on with my Esante embroidery machine.

The stocking is really easy to make, and it is a clean method! 1/3 yard of 44" fabric/lining/batting is required. Simply cut 2 pieces each of the outer fabric, lining fabric and batting from a stocking shape pattern (I just sketch one out). Do whatever design detail you want to the outer fabric - you can quilt it like I did, or not. Applique them if you like. Then, to construct the stocking, layer as follows:

  • One layer of batting
  • The "outer" fabric, both pieces right sides together.
  • One layer of batting
(note- if you quilted the fabric and batting together, then just lay them right sides together, it comes out same as above!
  • The Lining pieces, right sides together

Stitch or serge all around except the top. Turn so that the stocking is lining side out. Attach the cuff (simply a rectangle the size of the stocking opening, sewn into a cylinder), which has been embroidered or embellished as you wish, including trim (trim sewn on the bottom will clean finish a 1-layer cuff), wrong side down to the lining's right side. Slip in a loop of braid for hanging. Sew around. Turn, and wow! It's done!
