Berry Patch Stars
I bet you are saying that there is not much contrast, and it is true in this image. you can't even make out the design very well. But believe me, in real life it will be much prettier. I actually didn't want to have a lot of contrast, I wanted it all muted and garden-like. I had originally planned it with some dark rose, and the stars stood out quite well, but in the end, it just wasn't what I wanted. See? Just because the "rules" say you have to have contrast for a successful quilt doesn't mean you have to follow them!!
Update! I finished this quilt in the middle of July, 2001. It is about 55x55 inches.
I made 16 blocks, no sashing, and put on 2 small borders. I decided not to make a pieced border, I ran out of fabric, and I wanted to move on to another project! I machine quilted this in a 2 inch grid. I used a walking foot, and pink cotton quilting thread by Mettler. It is a nice thick thread, 40 weight, and I liked it very much although it left some lint in my machine. I used Warm and Natural cotton batting. I basted this quilt with June Taylor basting spray, and I must say it is the most amazing product. I am a really bad machine quilter, but this spray made all the difference. I had no tucks in the quilt. There is an issue of hazardous fumes, so either use this outside, or do as I did: put the dogs in the other room, open the windows, and spray sparingly. It is no where near as bad as spray painting. I know, you still can't make out the pattern, there is very little contrast in value. It is a very pretty and airy quilt up close, and so I am happy with it. It is very comfortable too, and I'm sure it will hold up well with all the quilting. Laziness set in, and I wanted to stop at a 6 inch grid, since Warm and Natural states you can leave it at 10 inches apart, but deep inside I know that a maximun of 3 inches is safest on most quilts. I didn't want it to puff out in a funny way after washing, so I quilted in all the seamlines. The backing and binding are from the same cream and strawberries fabric that is the background of the block. I machine stitch my bindings. |
