September 2001
Flags in Stars I got the idea from a picture of a quilt I saw in a magazine. The quilt was not a featured quilt, It was actually in the background of a photo that accompanied an article, but it caught my eye, and I wrote up the plans for it. It was easy enough, it is a basic flying geese star, but with a pieced center. I had red and white striped fabric, and blue with stars fabric, which I pieced together into 20 6 1/2 x 61/2 inch flags. They are not proportioned correctly, but don't let that bother you (it bothered me a little at first, but remember, before the government started outlining everything for us, American people stitched their own flags to fly, and they were of all sizes and proportions.) The star points are flying geese blocks. The blocks are all different: various light and dark creams, tans, and browns are being used for the star points and block backgrounds. I will be putting the blue and gold skinny sashing, but the borders are undecided as of yet. Update: I came up with a really neat border treatment, as you can see in the pictures. The outer borders are straight forward enough, simply add cornerstones or a different color. To get the innermost part of the border to work, i set in the blue squares in the corner of the 4 outermost blocks. I machine pieced this quilt. I would have finished this quilt on September 11th, but with the tragic plane-attacks on America, I was in shock. The first crashes were only 150 miles from me! I finished this quilt top the following day, and I took time to make some other patriotic things for us as well. I used Hobbs Heirloom Cotton batting, and spray-basted the quilt. I machine quilted in all the seams, and free-motion quilted a feathered wreath in each star center. The border is quilted with hanging diamonds. I bound the quilt by folding the excess backing around to the front, which made a nice fat (1 inch) edging. ![]() The backing is the same fabric as the binding (it is simply folded from back to front and topstitched) ![]() The stars are also ditch quilted in all the seams. ![]() ![]() |
