Barry and Czupryna get in: Outlaw Wins Central

As it turned out, the playoff chase wasn't much to shout about. Several weeks ago, the present 1 and 2 teams in each division and and the two points teams where the sames as it was today.
  • Jackson wins the East.
  • Outlaw defeats JK wins the Central. Next week they will play again in a game that counts.
  • Barry and Czupryna win the points slot. CZ scores 67 in his defeat of Wallace. Barry loses to Peil, but still retains his slot. Both teams are 5-8-1. Since seeds 4 - 8 are determined by record. Barry wins the 7th slot over CZ thanks to his week 9 win 40-37 in head to head competition.
Next weeks pairings

  • 2 Jackson vs 7 Barry
  • 3 Outlaw vs 6 Jones-Klingman
  • 4 Best vs 5 Talbot

CZ really poured it on the last four weeks. 2-8 going back into division play, we went 3-0-1 in the division. Most impressive was his last two weeks when he scored 61 and 67 points to win a points slot. The 67 matches his best ever. The old man is usually noted for his fondness for tight ends, but it is Wide receivers that are scoring points for him this year. Joey Galloway and Eric Moulds both had 15 points. Jimmy Smith added 7. Some potentially bad news as QB Mark Brunell will miss the remainder of the BRFL season.

A one man team. Terrell Davis scored 19 points this week and 146 so far this year, but the rest of Wallace's team did not produce. Wallace is out of the playoffs. It just doesn't seem like December without Wallace in the thick of it. Of course it doesn't seem like December shopping for Christmas trees in 80 degree weather.

Wow, another amazing shootout. Jackson becomes the third team in BRFL history to lose a game after scoring in the 60s. 62 is the second highest losing score in history. Talbot set the record last week when he scored 64 to Mosakowski's 75.

Both Best and Jackson finish 9-5 with 3-3 division records and split their series this year. The difference came down to head to head points which Jackson wins after whipping Best 70-25 in week 11. Best needed to win by 46 this week, and scored 70 points, but Jackson scored quite a bit more than 25.

Two teams were key for this game, Buffalo and Minnesota. Jackson started BUF Qbs and Jay Reimersma, and Best countered with Antowain Smith and Kicker Steve Christie. One of Best's pet strategies is to try and use the kicker of his opponents QB. Christie scored 17 and Smith 6, but Flutie managed 13. In the Viking game, Jackson looked to pull away with three TDs from Randy Moss (for the second straight week). Best countered with Leroy Hoard (13)in the Minnesota D (9), who scored late. It was 62-58 after Sunday's action.

It came down to Monday night and Brett Favre. Best had to sweat a little bit as the winning TD didn't come until the 4th quarter.

Jones/Klingman won round 1, Outlaw won this game, next week they meet in round three. A tale of two styles. JK did all he could to pull this out, while Outlaw stuck with the default. Perhaps it is time to find him and alert him to the fact that he is the third seed for the playoffs.

Some one tell Dick Peil that blowing out in week 14 is no longer meaningful if you've done nothing all year long. Under the old format, this would have been worth something. This year, it's called playing out the string. Oakland's QBs threw twice to Tim Brown for scores, but also threw twice to Barry's D for scores, but it didn't matter.

Barry loses this game, but holds onto his points slot. Credit AB with the pick-up of the week: the Miami D with 19 points. Miami is the former defense of Jackson, Barry's first round opponent.

Mosakowski-Hale wins their 10th game this year despite a banged up lineup. The win clinches the number one seed, which wins a dubious prize, a week 15 date with red-hot Czupryna. Randall Cunningham shouldered the load this week with his 25 points. Seattle's D took another back for a score, givning them 101 points this season.

Stroupe's season is over. He kept it interesting with a run at the points slot.

Bud plays out the string to even his record at 7-7 and finally vanquish Talbot, who he has always had trouble with.

Talbot's loss costs him the tie-breaker in his 4-5 game with Best. Another injury as Michael Westbrook is lost for the BRFL season. In recent weeks, Talbot has also lost starters Natrone Means and Jake Reed.

Week 15 Preview

The most curious thing about the match-ups for week 15 is that each game matches a former champion with a someone who has never won.

  • Czupryna 1991 vs Mosakowski-Hale
  • Jackson 1987 vs Barry
  • Outlaw 1995 vs Jones/Klingman
  • Best 1994 vs Talbot
Another interesting thing is that none of these champions is Wallace. He's played in this week 7 out of 10 years.

The last two weeks have been the two highest scoring weeks in league history. Thats like about 175 regular season weeks. We averaged 52 and 49 points in those weeks. What was it, the warm December weather? Or are we in the league so astute about fantasy football that we have reached a state of perfection?

Perfection is hardly the term to descibe my season to date picks. 2-4 last week, 40-42-2 for the season. Not too many games left.

Mosakowski-Hale vs Czupryna ................................ MOS by 12
There are a few in the league that think that Czupryna can upset the Mo-has. Huh? This is second most impressive BRFL team of all time. Last week, this supposedly banged up Mo-ha team scored 55, the week after winning the division 75-64 over Talbot. 130 points in two weeks.

Meanwhile, CZ is coming off matching his all time high of 67 and a two week total of 128. So who crashes this week? My guess it is the old man, not that he can keep up with the young whippersnappers. I think Brunells injury turns Jacksonville conservative thereby lowering the effectiveness of two of his players. Mos to advance they get Freeman back and a lot of Green Bay recievers are out this week.

Jackson vs Barry ........................................... Jackson by 5
Here's a stat that will send a chill down Jackson's spine. Barry has never lost his initial playoff game. However, Jackson should advance because he has pretty good match-ups for his QBs. AB's Denver should not light it up too much against the Giants since that is a big overmatchup.
3. Outlaw vs 6. Jones-Klingman ................................... OUTLAW by 4

These two turn around and knock heads again this week. Here is an interesting stat regarding Jones-Klingman. They are 0-3 in week 15. The fact that they are at this week for only the fourth time in twelve years is another interesting stat. You have to root for them because they are trying, but lord knows they just don't have the match-ups. Outlaw is off who knows where and probably isn't aware of the fact the his team is in the playoffs. He probably isn't even aware that Dorsey Levens and Derrick Mayes are healthy again and should have big games this week. They will likely sit on his bench in favor of Irv Smith.

Please JK win. Do it for all of us that care and study match ups, read this site and follow our stats and love the legend and folklore of the league. However, you won't win. There are two things against you. Your match-ups and history. Outlaw...come out come out where ever you are and claim your prize.

  • 90 wk 6 Outlaw 40 Jones 23
  • 91 wk 7 Outlaw (W) Jones

  • 98 wk 11 Jones-Klingman 33 Outlaw 32
  • 98 wk 14 Outlaw 56 Jones-Klingman 38
4. Best vs 5. Talbot ...................................... Talbot by 4
For weeks we thought that however plays Talbot this week is a goner. But in week 14, Talbot slipped a bit and Best scored 70 points. So this match-up might be very interesting. The key will be Monday night. San Francisco plays Detroit. Talbot is 0-2 with his SF QBs play on Monday night, but he is also averaging 61 points in those games. Best has not shown the ability to string together back to back big weeks. Something Talbot does regularly. Talbot beat Best on Monday in week 9, he should do it here, and set up a rematch with Mos.
