Antiquity 2.7  Civilization I Sequel (Freeware Clone - Alpha Version)
posted by CivPartisan at Mon, 11 September 2006 08:033:41

There are a number of attempts at making civilization type games by private authors. Games such as FreeCIV and FreeCOL are among the best known successes. But a true Civ I clone has never really caught on. I suspect that the excitement of so many commercial civilization style games probably took the market by storm. Moreover, the Civilization consumer is a tough nut to crack. Players of the Civilization series are exceptionally particular about TBS needs. If you can make it with them, you're in for life.

Antiquity 2.70 attempts to be a game that begins it's play in 3000 B.C., the dawn of Civilization. You can choose to play up to many civilizations spread across a random generated map. You begin as one of 2 thru 30, and attempt to build up an empire from a single settler. The interface is not familiar and takes a bit of getting use to. There really is a gross absence of an AI so your game will simply be one-sided. In fact, if a game hardly at all, Antiquity is more of an examination of what an unfinished homemade civ game can start out as. I would like to take this opportunity to invite programmers and developers to restart this project either from the ground up or continue to code what is here. I have included both the game files and the source for your convenience.

Note: This is a DOS program and it is an open source project that has been floating around dead on the net. You basically can take this on, with no special licenses needed. What an absolute treasure this is to find for enthusiastic game developers.

System Requirements

  • IBM/PC/XT/AT/Tandy and most Compatibles
  • DOS 3.3 compatible OS or higher
  • 640K Ram
  • Mouse recommended
  • Supports EGA/VGA/MCGA and Tandy Graphics
  • Program small enough to play from 720k floppy

Note: No map editor or scenario utilities of any kind. In fact, game play interface leaves much to be desired. Graphics aren't even good for the time period. No sound. The original programmers boast this game as a sequel to Civilization I, but I beg to differ. There really isn't much to qualify this game as different or enhanced to be a sequel. I do however think there is a structure, that while different offers a different path that Civilization might have taken. It is this path that I endorse and encourage programmers to investigate. This game has ideas that could be monumental.

Pocket Civ Updated in COLOR!
posted by CivPartisan at Thur, September 07, 2006 12:23:01

Here is a great piece of news for all the PDA buffs out there. Talented programmer Shawn McCaffrey is at it again with his work on Pocket Civ. The program has been updated with color graphics! Now you can enjoy even better than ever quality freeware on your PDA with your favorite price tag of FREE!

Here is what the author says about Pocket Civ:

"Currently a closed project; not accepting new developers...Ideally, to create a game that's as close to Sid Meier's Civilization (Civ1) as possible on a hand-held device. Realistically, to develop a civ-like game having some degree of playability, but lacking many of the elements of the PC game. The ultimate goal of creating a Civ1 clone is more of an abstract destination; it's the journey that counts. Copyright (c) 2002-2006 Shawn McCaffrey, All Rights Reserved."

Check out these excellent b/w screenshots!

Get Pocket Civ here!

This project is currently up to Version 6.0 -- show the author your support by visiting the official site as well:

Official Site: pocketciv.radioxy.com

Requirements: Palm O/S 3.1+ (Runs on all modern Palm handhelds, dating back to the Palm III and the Handspring Visor. Works great on a B&W or color PDA!).

Some links fixed - More Pages Added!
posted by CivPartisan at Mon, 04 September 2006 11:43:27

I've taken the time to fix links on the navigation bar and add the revised Civ I pages with some working downloads too. I've also reduced the size of the Colonies screenshots (sorry) but bandwith really isn't going to allow me to give you those beautiful 1024x768 svga graphics, but the images are still good.

The CSA section is still on time for the end of the month, but I wanted to remind visitors that it is never too late to submit anything that will make the site better. I am always on the lookout for obscure or interesting news in regard to Civ-like games. If you have a site that you would like to promote here on CPH, please contact me asap. I've also added tentative sections for Civ SNES and Civ II PSX. If you have screenshots or utilities for any of these versions please contact the webmaster here.

Swedish Colonization Clone: COLONIES
posted by CivPartisan at Sun, 03 September 2006 1:31:18

A real treat has arrived for fans of Colonization by a Swedish team who have dedicated their time to the production of a fine addition to the world of Colonization: COLONIES.

The first beta of Colonies is now avaible for download here or click on the thumbnail above.

According to the author(s):

"Some have asked for a manual. Again we want to remind you that there is not that much to do yet, we have got the basic interface running so far. Basic stuff like building colonies, field, mines, roads. Produce goods, buy/sell goods and units in Europe. But actually there is no purpose in doing anything... since there are no opponents you have no reason to earn money, and since you don't need money there is no reason to refine and sell goods. =) .. this first release will only show you how the interaction will work, the feeling of playing it, the looks and some of the new features."

Check out these cool screenshots!

#1 #2 #3 #4

Please remember, this game is in its early stages and is not yet a full-fledged alpha or pre-release. Hence, offer suggestions and kind criticism to help facilitate the production of this fantastic labor of love.

Note: The file is 14.4mb a bit of a job for dial-up less than 56k, otherwise a fast download. Try it today!

CSA Pages are in production
posted by CivPartisan at Tues, 29 August 2006 10:12:32

The Civilization Series Archives are continually changing at this time as new entries are finalized. Some links may appear and disappear throughout the coming month, but this is nothing to worry about. This is because some information may be combined or reorganized for better navigation and viewing. No information will be omitted; it will just be placed in its proper spot in the archive. So, if you see a download or info link disappear, it really hasn't, because it has just been moved to where it belongs.

Note: In addition, you will note that some downloads are being placed on this site permanently. This is to fix any problems with linking and maintain good service for the archive.

Links Section Grows for CPH: 08-26-2006

There are now 79 links in the links section and it continues to grow. These links are still in a state of organization but have all been checked as of 08-24-2006. In addition, there are some font and menu changes to the site to provide better navigation as well as some clarity to planned links for pages that are still being written.

The Civilization Series Archives links at the right have been grayed out to represent inactive links. I did this to reduce any confusion about dead links. And in answer to questions about when, these links should be active by 09-30-2006. In the meantime, the Free Civilization Games section has been activated with links to the official sites for each game and I have added a preview to the DOS version of the Civilization section which is under construction.

Visit the mock up of the Microprose site here. I have recreated the Microprose site as the "unofficial" site. It will have all of the official patches and so forth when I am finished with it. Check it out and offer any ideas if you can.

Note: Check back soon for more screenshots in the previews section -- one has been added for Ancient Mars already.

According to the author on the website:

"Civ89 is a turn-based strategy game for the TI-89, TI-89 Titanium, TI-92 plus, and Voyage 200 calculators that is based on the Civilization series. It is playable by two human competitors on the same calculator. It is no-stub, meaning that no additional software is required to run the program.

Your mission: build an empire and conquer opposing armies. Overwhelm your opponent with superior technology. Build a vast economic domain to support your growing army. Develop your kingdom through construction of cities and roads. Who will be victorious?"

Civ89 is freeware and an open source project. Developers are welcome for this game and it is an excellent opportunity for enthusiasts. The author has already endured much of the effort for this masterpiece -- offer help if you can, or visit the author's site here and show your support.
