CNN's Pele's League

Week 10

Quick Review - November 6th
by Carlos Curro, Sao Paulo 55ers owner

We still have a big battle in Pele's League for the top positions, and we have some close games in Week 10. And, as there're no playoffs in this league, the team with the most wins gets the championship after all the seventeen weeks. So, it's time for some teams to avoid automatic elimination: there are five teams tied for last place at 3-7, and they'd better start a HUGE streak if they want to hope for a miracle!

The PIMP C's REAL G's finally got out of the slump by beating the Randolph Blue Devils, 55-21. The REAL G's (5-5) started the season very hot, but they've struggled lately. Maybe this win wakes them up for the reminder of the season. They must thank QB Drew Bledsoe, WR Rob Moore and K Jason Elam for this week's deciding points. The Blue Devils (3-7) scored only 21 points, maintaining their position as the worst attack of the league.

The best team in the league, the Sao Paulo 55ers, escaped a scary one this week against the city rival Sao Paulo CCM. The 55ers won despite scoring their lowest point total in a week this season, 33 points. Their luck came as the CCM scored only 21. The 55ers (9-1) continue their streak, thanks to the Broncos D and to K Jeff Wilkins. The CCM (3-7) continue their slump, and they must blame QB Scott Mitchell awful performance: minus-7 points.

The biggest upset of the week came in the Oporto Eagles versus the Ithaca Isolators game. The Isolators have the league's best attack, but they got surprised by an inspired Eagles attack, beating them by only two points, 62-60. This Eagles win, their sixth, puts them only a game behind the exact Ithaca Isolators (7-3) for a third place position. Once again, like every week so far, the Isolators scored a lot of points behind their Raiders' players, and added a few more with a nice 10-point performance by K Matt Stover of the Ravens. But the Eagles got some nice performances, too. QB Vinny Testaverde and WR Derrick Alexander played well, and K John Kasay finally got some points going. But the difference of the game came on the defensive side: the Eagles started the Cincinnati Bengals defense, scoring 16 points, against only 6 by the Buccaneers defense of the Isolators. Not only that, but the Bengals also allowed fewer yards than the Bucs, so +6 TmD bonus for the Eagles - and a two point victory for them, a huge one in a very important moment.

After an awful start, the Sao Paulo Golpes Baixos have played much better. They defeated the tough Hard Plays, and in this week they've beaten the Cortland, NY Gradams Greats, 52-29. The key players for the Golpes Baixos (3-7) were QB Brett Favre, WR Bert Emanuel and K Steve Christie. The Gradams Greats (3-7) have struggled lately: their only good performance this week came from their Tennessee Oilers' Defense with 11 points plus the six-point bonus.

And the Sao Paulo Hard Plays escaped a very tough match against the San Juan Coquis, 62-54. The Hard Plays (8-2) relied on QB Brad Johnson and RB Garrison Hearst to carry the load, and they welcomed a very needed 9-point performance from Robert Brooks on Sunday Night. The Coquis (3-7) played well, thanks to QB Neil O'Donnell, RB Gary Brown and specially to Eric Metcalf, who scored two TD's for the San Diego Defense/Special Teams of the Coquis. But they fell a little short: the Jaguars D of the Hard Plays allowed just a few less yards than the Chargers, so the +6 bonus decided the game in favor of the Sao Paulo team.
