Football '97 ESPN's Global Football League Week 10 Review -
Thursday, November 6th Screaming Meanies 44 vs. 51 New London Wacker Boyz II
Big week of GFL action, and we now have to start thinking about the playoffs. With only three games remaining in the regular season, teams can't afford to lose important games, or any game at all for some of them. The New London Wacker Boyz II got a very important win over the league's best team, the mighty Screaming Meanies, on a very close finish. The Boyz (6-4) have to thank WR Bert Emanuel for his two TD performance, and mostly they must send some greetings to Meanies' kicker Jason Hanson, who had the chance to bring them back from behind on Sunday Night, but fell short. Even though QB Warren Moon had a spectacular week, the Meanies (7-3) suffered a tough loss. But, they're still two games ahead of second place in the East, and have very strong chances of winning the division. For the Boyz, the win was much more important, as they maintain a tied first place position in the West. To keep pace with the Boyz, the Sao Paulo Travelers had to beat their city rival, the Sao Paulo Big Passaros. The game turned out to be a very exciting one, as the Big Passaros led it all the way into Sunday Night. But, Travelers' WR Robert Brooks and K Ryan Longwell started a come from behind effort that put the Travelers ahead for good. Passaros' RB Dorsey Levens couldn't get anything against the Lions D, so the battle of Sao Paulo goes to the Travelers, who have now a 6-4 record, tied with the Boyz for first in the West - and they face each other next week, in a huge showdown. The Passaros (5-4-1) still maintain second place in the East, but they're in danger, as other teams like the Cats and Thorns maintain a very close follow. The New York Freaky Fat Cats are on the rise, and they showed the Crown City Thorns that they're very interested in a playoff berth, beating them 64-48. The Cats (4-4-2) finally squeezed some points from QB Jeff Blake, but the main weapon was the Packers Defense, with 19 points. The Thorns (5-5) had a nice performance from QB Gus Frerotte, but all other six-point players struggled, as none scored a TD. With this win, the Cats move forward in the East, trying to catch the same Thorns (third place) and the second place Big Passaros, so they're sending a message for them: they want a playoff spot. If you're looking for a huge slump, look no further. The Lounge Lizards have now lost three straight games, this time losing to the Da Kine Hawaiian, a division rival that now have some feasible chances of getting a playoff spot in the West. The Lizards (5-5) are playing poorly, mostly because of the Patriots D slump (only 1 point this week). The Hawaiian (4-6) are trying to start a final rise to get a playoff berth, as they continue to be only two games from the top teams in the West, but they'll need some favorable results besides their own wins. The Lizards still have a good position (only a game behind the division leaders), but they will need some wins in the final lap to get to the playoffs. And the Kauai Rainbows managed a win over the Bloody Sabbaths, 48-38, a win that still gives them mathematical hopes of a wild-card berth. The Rainbows, at 3-7, still have the league's worst record. They got this win thanks to some Broncos players, like WR Rod Smith, K Jason Elam (13 points) and the Broncos D. The Sabbaths (3-6-1) had three players on Monday Night, but QB Kordell Stewart, TE Mark Bruener and WR Andre Rison struggled to get some points. They are now at the very bottom of the GFL West, and have only very slightly chances to get a wild card berth (mathematical, they need wins and a lot of combined results!).
