Today I went for a walk with Quake in my neighborhood for the first time since last fall. I have been golfing since the spring two to three times a week. This fall due to wet weather my golf has been scaled back to once a week. But, instead of riding around the course in a cart, I now walk the par three course. It cuts back on how many holes I can play and my game is suffering some, because of that. But, it's all about the walking and that makes it okay. During today's walk I noticed that it was not as strenuous and I handled it with more ease. I purchased a pedometer that measure steps, miles, and calories burned. Today I walked one mile in 2,461 steps and burned 320 calories. I did it in well under 30 minutes too! (It used to take me 40 min.)
Another milestone was met when I was able to golf with Randy, and my father and brother in-law, Bob and Jason. It was a first with Jason, he is a pro golfer, and he is very good. It was fun to see how it is done and where I stack up against him. Granted it was just the par three course and I play it all the time compared to Jason's first time. But I did okay shooting a round of nine holes in 36 strokes. Bob shot 33, Randy shot 42, and Jason turned in a three over par 30. Next time through, I am sure he'll kick my ass! He's used to the temps of SOCAL, and Arizona and we played a week before Thanksgiving two days after a snowstorm and the wind was sinking the cold right into your bones…poor baby! (LOL) It was something I had always dreamed of doing, but because of my weight condition, never thought I would. Never quit, dreams are made into reality if you really want them to happen.
We suffered another loss in the family recently when my Cousin Steve passed away. He wasn't much older than I am and like me had bouts with weight issues. He was diagnosed with sleep apnea and had surgery to open his air passages. Some time later, something went wrong during the night and he could not breath. He went into a coma. They took him off life support and he passed away the next day. I am starting to feel like my Uncle Ivan who says, “There are too many empty seats” when we attend our family gatherings.
Christmas is nearing and the holidays are always a tough time for those of us trying to lose weight. At Thanksgiving we had the family over for dinner but sent the entire leftovers home with everyone, so that I wouldn't be tempted to overeat. I celebrated the day like everyone else. I made lots of my stuffing and made sure there was plenty of it, for later. Not much of that went out the door. It's my favorite part and it's okay to splurge a little bit!
The next month will be tough but we have a game plan installed to handle potential problems with food. If Shawna is given goodies at work she will take them to the local food bank instead of home. We will have the family gathering here and save whatever we plan on having that is especially fattening, for Christmas day. New years and the Super Bowl will soon follow and I plan on celebrating those holidays in similar fashion.
