Back to Journal Page

Everything is going well, I am not having any trouble sticking to a 4000 calorie per day limit. In fact most days I come in around 3000 to 3500. I feel like I have taken off some inches but won't know how much weight I have lost until after the fourth of July. My next weigh in is scheduled for 7/16/03.

I have been golfing and working in the yard and swimming up until last Tuesday. The YMCA changed their schedule for the summer and turned the place into a day care center. The two lanes that have been set-aside specifically for lap swimmers are now being used for water walking as well. It's too hard to share a lane with another swimmer for me due to my size, let alone an elderly water walker. That combined with all the children in the pool taking swim lessons makes for a poor combination. You just have to know that the amount of urine in the pool is taking an upswing these days…no thanks! I got upset and left last week before I finished all of my laps. I did not know that the schedule had changed, and had an argument with the lifeguard on duty, whom insisted that the rules she was quoting me were in fact, in effect. I got out and got dressed and stormed out to the front desk to discuss it with them. Because they certainly would be on my side, right? Wrong… they told me the same thing and gave me a new schedule. I got even more furious with the situation and left in a huff vowing to cease my membership and never return.

Shawna has been doing so good with her weight loss and working out at the YMCA is a big part of her success. She is down several sizes in clothes and is now fitting into a size ten. Could a size eight be next? I think so, she is getting buff, and she has a lot more definition in her arms and shoulders. So I don't want to stand in the way of her success. I have decided to take a leave of absence from the YMCA for the summer and she will continue to go.

I plan on taking up walking again and getting back into my weight training on the Bow Flex. I will also continue practicing and playing golfing on a weekly basis. My Father in law, brother Lou and I, all went golfing together last Sunday for father's day. We had a great time and it was the first time that Bob (father in law) and I had ever golfed together. This was something that I had wanted to do for several years, and it was a personal milestone for me to have finally done it. Bob offered to buy me a yearlong pass for the par three course at Battle Creek as a Christmas present. So that I can golf anytime I want. What a nice gesture, and it is something that I can really use.

I use a cart to play the par three and not many people do since it is a short course with narrow fairways. But, I am not in good enough shape yet, to walk the whole thing. One day a couple of weeks ago, the head pro at Battle Creek was checking me in. He mentioned to me that carts are not allowed on the fairways on the par three course. I said, oh I did not know that. To which he replied, well the fairways on that par three are awfully small, yes; they are way too narrow to be driving carts onto. I assured him that I would no longer do it. But, what an ass! This was his way of saying that I should be walking it like everyone else and that I shouldn't have to drive out to my ball on such a narrow fairway. But, you know what? The first few times I went out to play that course I had no idea what to expect or what my body could handle. The guys at the front desk up there at Battle Creek can really be insensitive jack asses at times. One of these days I might have to set them straight. I mean, how many guys my size are out there playing golf. Not too damn many, in fact none at all. And I am not that bad of a golfer for a guy that's been doing it for three months. My swing is getting better and more consistent and my scores are gradually coming down. In a year or two I am going to be good at this game. Because I am determined to be and when I get locked in and motivated it gets done.

All the golf and exercise programs and yard work have been very positive towards my cause. I can feel my legs coming back to full strength and my endurance and agility are getting better by the week. I am gradually becoming the Hugh I was before, and it feels great.
