Our golf game on 5/16/03 was cut short by a thunderstorm. We were able to get 16 holes in though, and I was able to achieve my goal of reaching two greens from the tee. I am putting better and made par on six holes, bogey on four and the rest were sevens and eights. I was close to reaching three other greens from the tee as well. One rolled over the green and two others reached the front tip of the apron.
Last weeks golf game was canceled because my knee was giving me trouble. In fact I wasn't able to exercise at all. I was scheduled to run Quake through his first obedience trial competition on 5/24,25/03, and wanted to be well enough to get through it. Monday we had to leave school early because Quake was sick. He had vomited what looked to be tree bark that morning, and had some bark in his stool. At school he suddenly quit doing his drills, so we took him outside. He tried to take a BM but couldn't and yelped in pain. So we rushed him to the vet and were very worried at that point. Dogs can get plugged up or blocked and die from it. So our stress rose to a peak level. We have lost four of our pets, three of them tragically in the past three years. So we get upset when the possibility arises!
He ended up having a sand-packed colon, in short he was plugged and holding a large amount of stool in his large intestine. My vet has a great sense of humor and as we viewed the pictures of Quakes colon he pointed out the stool and said, “ in short he has a mega-turd.” Long story short, he passed the stool and survived mega-turd”J
We went on to compete in the obedience trial and on Saturday Quake had the best run of the day going. Before he ran around the jump and got DQ'd. If he had made the jump he would have scored 195 points out of a possible 200. I was disappointed but still very proud of him. We were competing in what is called the Novice A class for the UKC (United Kennel Club). This class is for dogs and handlers competing for the very first time in any UKC event. You earn a leg every time you pass with a score of 170 or better. When you earn three legs you are given a title and move on to the next class. The trials for advanced titles get more and more difficult as you advance.
The dog and handler that won our class on Saturday was jumping over from AKC (American Kennel Club) were she had been competing for titles. She and her dog were very polished and in no way were they novice. But it was their first event as UKC members, so they were allowed to compete. They took first place and were awarded best team of the day overall. Meaning they scored the highest of any other team for the day in all classes top to bottom. Their score was 198. If only Quake would have made that jump!
We had entered Quake to compete both days and on Sunday he did make that jump and scored a 192 on his run. He received a second place ribbon and his first leg ribbon for Novice A. The first place dog scored 195 and was awarded best score of the day overall. Needless to say our class was very competitive and we shined with the best of them.
To think that a little over a year ago I was in a hospital bed wondering if I was ever going to have a normal life again. Look at me now, Lord! Thank God for this day!
