RACHEL MEETS A MAN WHO REAWAKENS THE DEMONS IN HER PAST...

A gang of thieves steal the horses, including Katie, at the Rock Creek Pony Express Station and Teaspoon sends Buck, Kid and Noah after the outlaws. The riders manage to track the horses but are quickly lured into a trap. A man arrives to save them from the horse thieves but he gets shot in the process. He introduces himself as Mike Staulder, a special agent for the company in the Nebraska Territory. The riders take Mike, and a couple of the outlaws, back with them to Rock Creek.

The first thing Mike sees when he opens his eyes is Rachel and he is instantly attracted to the lovely housekeeper. He also impresses the riders with his heroics earlier. Rachel invites him to stay with them until his wound heals. He accepts the invitation. One time, while Rachel was dressing Mike's wound, she finds a bottle of liquor and immediately gets angry. She tells Mike that it was against company policy to drink and orders him to hide the liquor from the boys. Se realizes Mike has a drinking problem when Kid and Noah tell her that the drunken Pony Express agent started a fight in the saloon.

Meanwhile, Jesse is getting fed up of being protected by everyone. He wants to do the same thing the riders do, but Teaspoon, Rachel even Lou and the boys rein him in. He aks Mike for advice and the older man tells him that in his case he found ways to make adults take him seriously. Jesse takes Mike's advice to heart and mounts the wild chesnut colt tied to the corral. He gets knocked down and is nearly kicked by the horse if Mike didn't pull him in time.

Later that night, Rachel thanks Mike for saving Jesse and they talk. They share some liquor and the next thing Rachel knew it was already morning and she had no memory of what happened the night before. She was so upset that she shouted at Lou to stop asking her questions and didn't believe Mike when he said nothing happened. Mike apologized that his drinking upset her but Rachel said it was her drinking that upset herself. Rachel tells Lou that she was a recovering alcoholic and didn't want to go through the same hell she was in before.

Jesse and a friend decide to try out a bottle of liquor and they invite Mike to join them. He pushes Jesse away when the young boy starts asking questions. Suddenly, the horse thieves show up and they go after Mike. The leader is out for revenge because Mike killed his brother. Because he was drunk, Mike's reflexes were slow so he ends up shooting Jesse when the boy runs into his line of fire. Stunned, Mike tries to get to Jesse but Rachel stops him. He hits Rachel and draws Kid's ire. Kid threatens to shoot him if he doesn't leave.

Jesse's wound is minor and he is able to get up the next day. Rachel talks to him about drinking and Mike. As soon as Rachel steps out of the bunkhouse, the horse thieves pounce on her and holds her captive in exchange for Staulder. Mike gives himself up in exchange for Rachel and gets shot in the arm and thigh. Rachel breaks free from the man holding her and the riders are able to get their shots in. The three horse thieves die.

Mike rides out when his wounds are healed but not before he and Rachel talked. He admits he needs help about his drinking. He tells Rachel that he hopes to find someone just like her when he straightens out his life.
