THE RIDERS MEET THE FUTURE OF LAW AND ORDER... PINKERTON DETECTIVES...

A notorious criminal is being held in Cottonwood and his cohorts try to break him out of jail. Jimmy witnesses this and joins the gunfight which kills a young boy. The criminals escape and the posse tracking them gives up too easily for Jimmy's peace of mind. He returns to Rock Creek with a heavy heart.

Meanwhile, Teaspoon meets Marie, a French woman. He is instantly attracted to her and she to him. The next day, Marie runs to Teaspoon for help, saying she was robbed. She explains that she has no one to turn to with her husband dead and her sister in Chicago. Teaspoon's protective instincts are aroused and he offers to help her out. Marie mentions that she intended to teach piano in Chicago and Teaspoon sets up a piano studio for her.

One night, Hickok finds some strange men looking around near the bank. Suspicious, he draws his gun until the leader introduces himself -- Blackhome, a detective from the famous Pinkerton Agency. The detective tells Teaspoon that he is on the trail of a notorious criminal named Lynch, the leader of the Seven Rivers gang which is targeting banks all over the territory. The detective criticizes Teaspoon and calls himself "the future" of law and order. More than a little impressed, Hickok begins to follow Blackhome. The detective tells Jimmy he has been following Lynch for a couple of years and shows the rider a piece of a cloth which always turns up around the gang.

Teaspoon and Marie become increasingly close, which irritates Jimmy because he thinks Teaspoon is forgetting Lynch. He turns to Blackhome for guidance, instead. One of Blackhome's detectives find Lynch and his gang and the Pinkerton men prepare to apprehend the criminals. Unfortunately, Teaspoon and the riders sort of blunder in and during the commotion, Teaspoon gets shot and the criminals get away.

Blackhome is furious with Teaspoon and gives him a dressing down. After he leaves, Teaspoon warns Jimmy that something isn't right with the detective, that his methods are questionable. Jimmy realizes Teaspoon is right when Blackhome nearly kills a young man who knows where Lynch and his gang are hiding. He also realizes where he has seen the cloth shown to him by the detective. Jimmy confronts Marie who admits that she isn't French and that she is helping Lynch. Jimmy gets the location of the gang's hideout from her and turns to his fellow riders for help.

They apprehend the gang and Hickok goes after Lynch but Blackhome interferes. He is bent on killing Lynch, finally telling Hickok that the criminal killed his son. Hickok and Teaspoon finally talk some sense into the detective. As for Marie, Jimmy keeps his promise not to tell Teaspoon that his new love is actually a thief's accomplice. She is arrested outside of town. But in the end, Teaspoon tells Jimmy he couldn't hide anything from him.
