Good Night, Sweet Charlotte

THE ARRIVAL OF LOU'S FRIEND AWAKENS TERRIBLE MEMORIES FOR THE FEMALE RIDER...

A friend of Lou arrives from St. Jo, Missouri but instead of being elated Lou becomes unusually edgy. Charlotte tells Louise that she plans to open a dress shop for them both using money that had saved from. Lou asks her about a man named Wicks and Charlotte says he is dead and that she and "the girls" gave him a fine funeral. Louise continues to feel uncomfortable having Charlotte around.

Kid notices and begins asking questions. Lou blows him off but immediately regrets her curtness towards him. Rachel also picked up on Lou's edginess and talks to the female rider. The housekeeper knows Charlotte is a prostitute and she asks Louise if she is ashamed to be Charlotte's friend. Lou says she is not but there is something about Charlotte that obviously bothers her. When Charlotte shows her the place she rented for the dress shop, Lou all but explodes. Charlotte reminds Lou that she helped her before and that it was Lou's turn to help her now. All she wants is to have a "normal life" like the one Lou had made for herself.

Meanwhile, a handsome banker -- Travis McKay -- falls for Charlotte and she encourages his attentions. He asks permission from Lou to court Charlotte and invites them to dinner. Charlotte tells Lou she is falling for Travis. But before the romance gets any deeper, Wicks arrives in Rock Creek and Lou sees him. Shocked, Lou confronts her friend and Charlotte admits that she stole some of Wicks' money. Lou tells Charlotte to hide while she can get horses, but Charlotte, seeing no way out, confronts Wicks with a gun. But the man is quick and he gets the gun. He forces Charlotte back to the hotel where her bags where but Charlotte manages to escape and take Wicks gun with her. Instead of shooting Wicks, she kills herself.

Lou is miserable and Kid tries to comfort her but she still wouldn't say anything about Charlotte. Kid, afraid of crowding her, keeps whatever questions he has to himself. Late that night, Lou takes Charlotte's bag and finds a bundle of money. She falls asleep and dreams of Wicks attacking her. She wakes up and gets out of the barn. On the way to the bunkhouse, she sees Rachel. They talk and Lou finally admits that she worked as a laundry girl for Wicks' whorehouse after she left of the orphanage. That's where she met Charlotte and became her friend. Lou tells Rachel that a year after she arrived in St. Jo, Wicks went to her room and raped her. Charlotte helped her get a ticket out of the city and escape the next day. Lou continues that after the incident, she cut her hair and started dressing as a boy.

In town, Wicks begins asking about Lou, whom he saw at Charlotte's funeral. He asks Kid and the rider tells him that Lou is on a run and will be back soon. When he gets to the bunkhouse, Kid tells Rachel a man was looking for Lou. Rachel becomes suspicious that it might be Wicks.

Wicks holds up Lou outside of towns and demands to have his money back. Lou refuses and accuses him of killing Charlotte. She also warns him not to touch her. Lou managed to steal Wicks gun. She wants to shoot him but Kid arrives and asks her not to. She finally put the gun down and let Kid take care of Wicks. Kid and Lou were taking Wicks to Teaspoon's office when Travis McKay comes out of nowhere and shoots Wicks dead. He is imprisoned for his crime. He tells Lou that he knew Charlotte was a prostitute but that it didn't matter because he loved her. Lou finally drew up the courage to tell Kid about her past.
