Tiger's Tale

NOAH AND CODY TAKE AN UNUSUAL PACKAGE TO ST. JO WHILE JESSE GETS A TASTE OF FIRST LOVE...

Noah and Cody win the chance for what they thought was a plum assignment -- delivery of a package that would pay them $100. What they didn't know was that they were taking a huge Bengal tiger to St. Jo, Missouri for the Barnum museum there. On their way, they find two nuns and a young woman stranded in the middle of the open field. It turns out that the nuns and their ward, Elizabeth Dooley, were on their way to St. Jo when the wheel of their wagon was broken. The man who was escorting them took the wheel to be fixed about a week ago and he hasn't returned since. Noah tells the nun he doesn't think the man is coming back and offers to take them to the city.

Back in Rock Creek, Jesse is having problems. He likes a girl named Mary Ellen but doesn't know what to do. Lou sees his difficulty and tells him to introduce himself. He does but nothing happens. Lou encourages him to follow his heart and pursue anyone he might be interested in. Jesse develops a huge crush in Lou and follows her advice. He enlists Teaspoon's help in writing a love letter but doesn't tell the Marshall whom the letter is for.

Cody, Noah, Elizabeth Dooley, Sister Anne and Sister Catherine set up camp for the night. While they were sleeping, an Indian steals the tiger and frees it. The riders wake up with the tiger -- which they named Pete -- gone. They begin looking for him. Good thing he leaves a trail of dead chicken which is easy to follow. At the same time, two poachers are also after Pete. They nearly catch him except that their horses were spooked by the tiger's roar. Finally, Noah and Cody find Pete but they don't know how to handle the huge tiger. Elizabeth suddenly shows a strange affinity for animals and she was able to "tame" Pete.

Pete wasn't the only animal she was able to tame. During the trip, Cody develops feelings for the young woman but the rider is torn because he knows Elizabeth wants to become a nun. Elizabeth was also beginning to get confused as she finds herself attracted to the blond rider. The older nun, Sister Catherine, notices this and gives the young woman a chance to find out if life in the convent is for her.

Lou receives the unsigned love letter and shows it to Rachel. The housekeeper says she thinks Teaspoon wrote it for the Kid. Lou is delighted and gives an astonished Kid a huge kiss. Jesse sees this and is disappointed. He leaves flowers on Lou's saddle with a short rhyme that says "Roses are red, sometimes they're hid. I like you a lot, these ain't from the Kid." Confused, Lou confronts Teaspoon who promises to admonish the letter writer. Lou catches Jesse eavesdropping, though, and realizes he wrote the letter and gave her the flowers. Teaspoon tells Jesse Lou is too old for her and that she is already spoken for.

The poachers catch up with the small group and they try to force Noah and Cody into releasing the tiger to them. Sister Catherine fires a gun and effectively distracts the poachers. Noah and Cody are able to fight back and were about to shoot the men when the nuns stopped them. Sister Catherine insists that there will be no more violence and suggests they go over a small hill to avoid the poachers. Once they get on the other side though, the poachers are waiting and they were able to take Pete. But they couldn't kill the tiger because Elizabeth kept protecting him. Noah and Cody catch up and are able to save both the young lady and the tiger.

Lou talks to Jesse and thanks him for sending her the letter and the flowers. Jesse is worried that the Kid knows what he did, but Lou assures him. She also tells him that one day, he'll find the girl for him.

Noah, Cody and the nuns arrive in St. Jo. Elizabeth realizes that her destiny is with the church and thanks Cody for helping her make the biggest decision of her life. Noah and Cody contemplate what Pete's life would be and decides to set him free.

IN THEIR WORDS: Buck began to show a lot of humor by the third season. Here's a nice dig at Cody he made after Teaspoon explained where Noah and Cody were taking the Bengal tiger...

Teaspoon: He's going into a menagerie. A collection of the strangest most unusual creatures on God's earth.
Buck (grinning): Seems like Cody will fit right in.
