WILL KID ASK LOU TO SHARE WHAT COULD BE A DANGEROUS LIFE?

A gang steals from a bank in the town of Davenport and kills the Marshall. Everybody escapes except one of them and is promptly arrested by a rather young and inept deputy. Teaspoon is asked to take the prisoner, whom the gang might want to spring. He takes Jimmy with him. At the same time, Kid and Lou are back from a special run and are looking forward to enjoying a brief vacation. Kid takes Lou to a "pretty little town" where "men take off their hats". What they don't know is that they are riding straight into the troubled little town of Davenport.

Kid and Lou arrive at Davenport just in time to see the Marshall being buried by the townspeople. Kid and Lou go to the hotel and are given separate rooms on separate floors after the hotel clerk finds out they are not married. Kid leaves Lou to take care of the horses promising to meet her at 6 in the evening, but she follows him out on an errand of her own. Later, Kid paces in front of the hotel, engrossed in practicing a speech. The minister sees Kid and tells him the town needs more people with smiles on their faces. Lou comes out looking very beautiful. She tells Kid she snuck out and went to some shops. Kid is mesmerized.

They have dinner and a walk under the stars. Lou asks Kid to tell her what has been bothering him. He tries to, but not before getting a promise from her not to interrupt him. Just as he is about to ask Lou something, shots are fired and they see the deputy struggle against members of the gang who are intent on springing their cohort. Kid joins the fray and manages to drive the thieves away. The young deputy dies, however. With no other law in town, Kid decides to "do the right thing" and watch over the prisoner. He pins on the deputy's badge while waiting for Teaspoon to come. He also asks the minister for help, but the man of God is "returned" beaten and bruised by the gang.

The prisoner is a young man named Dawkins. When Lou asks for his first name, he answers "it ain't important." He is attracted to Lou who is like no woman he has met. He asks Lou why she was sticking with the Kid considering their dangerous situation and she answers that she is doing it for love. He is fascinated by the idea that two orphans like Kid and Lou could grow up "good". Dawkins is also an orphan, whose desire to fit in led him to join a gang of thieves.

Meanwhile, Teaspoon and Jimmy come upon a lynching and they manage to drive the mob away and save a black man. Jimmy becomes rattled by what he saw and begins mouthing off against people who support the South, much to the consternation of Teaspoon. They begin to have heated arguments until the black man, Johnson, tells them it's more important to have more friends than enemies, especially in the eve of war.

Fearing their time is running out, Kid, Lou and Dawkins make a run for it. During their escape, the gang members shoot at Dawkins instead of rescuing. Lou and Kid point this out to Dawkins later. At camp, Lou tries to get Kid to ask her the question again, but Kid says he has been thinking and now realizes that he shouldn't ask Lou anything. Furious, Lou tells him he is always thinking "not enough doing". In the morning, Adrian offers to help them get out of the territory. But they are followed by the gang and Kid, sacrificing himself to prove his love for Lou, tells Dawkins to take Lou and ride fast. He provides cover for them as long as he could but gets shot.

Lou prepares to save the Kid and Dawkins offers to help her out. She asks why he would want to help her out and he says their in this mess because of him. He and Lou manage to save Kid, with a little help from Teaspoon and Jimmy. Dawkins gets shot, though, and dies, but not before he tells Lou that his first name is Adrian and that he always wanted to do something for someone he loved (which in this case is Lou).

Lou and Kid bury Adrian Dawkins. Lou makes Kid promise never to ride on without her again. Kid takes Lou's hand and kneels down and finally asks his question, "Lou? Louise McCloud, will you... marry...?" Before he gets the last word out, Lou kneels down and kisses him, shouting "yes". Teaspoon and Jimmy happily look on.
