THE RIDERS BECOME INVOLVED WITH A WOMAN WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE AN AGENT FOR THE SOUTH...

A young couple on a train see a bunch of soldiers on the platform. They know the army is waiting for them so the man immediately hands a book to his wife and tries to draw the soldiers' attention from her. While the young woman gets away, her husband is shot by the captain.

On a break from his run, Kid stops by at the Seneca Hotel hoping to get away from the waystation's hard bunks. He already has his key when he hears a young woman looking for a room. The hotel manager tells her that Kid got the last one, so the ever-chivalrous Kid offers his room. While he was having dinner that night, the woman comes up and introduces herself as Margaret Calhoun. Kid invites her to join him for dinner and she accepts but while they were talking, soldiers -- the same group from the train station -- arrive. Margaret becomes agitated. She gives Kid a book of poetry and then excuses herself saying she isn't feeling well. After she leaves, the soldiers approach Kid and ask him about the young woman he was just with. Kid tells them what Margaret told him, but the soldiers didn't find her.

Meanwhile in Rock Creek, the schoolhouse burned down, killing the teacher and reducing all the children's books to ashes. Teaspoon calls a town meeting and it is agreed that a new schoolhouse be built. Teaspoon tells the people that he already placed ads for a teacher in newspapers all over the territory. Noah suggests that the folks donate books until new ones arrive.Teaaspoon hires Rachel to be the news schoolteacher, much to the consternation of some of the town's upstanding citizens.

Kid returns to Rock Creek and is immediately greeted by Lou. While he was putting away his stuff, Lou sees the book of poetry Margaret gave him. Kid tells Lou it was given by a woman. Cody snatches the book and begins reading from it "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways". Lou realizes the book contains love poems and begins to feel jealous. Kid lies and tells her that the book was given by an old woman who was thanking him for giving up his room. He assures Lou that he wouldn't have taken it if he didn't think Lou would enjoy it. Pacified, Lou hugs killed and apologizes for doubting him, while Cody snickers.

The next day, the riders and other residents work at the new schoolhouse. Lou excuses herself to prepare for her ride and Kid accompanies her back to the bunkhouse. However, they find Margaret inside. She had been searching for the book. She lies and tells them that she just stopped by on her way to Fort Kearny to say hi. Lou realizes she is the "old woman" who gave Kid the book and leaves angrily. Margaret asks Kid if she could borrow the book, saying she wants to copy a poem from it. Kid promises to give it to her later. Lou waits until Margaret and Kid leave the bunkhouse and then returns to retrieve the book. She drops it in the book donation box on her way out of town. While walking her back to the hotel, Kid asks Margaret why soldiers are after her. She tells him that her husband caught Captain Saunders cheating at cards so the officer killed him and that they've been after her since.

The soldiers arrive in Sweetwater and seek Teaspoon's assistance. Cody tells them Kid was the one who met Margaret. When they ask Kid for the book, he tells them unwillingly that Lou has it. The soldiers leave and Kid goes after Margaret. She finally tells him that Saunders is after her because of the book and that Saunders is actually an outlaw who killed the real soldiers and stole their uniform. Realizing what kind of danger Lou is in, the riders go after her. Saunders is waiting for Lou. She tells them the book is back in Rock Creek and they don't believe her, she manages to escape but is nearly killed when the soldiers shoot at her. Kid, Jimmy, Cody and Buck arrive just in time to save her and drive away the soldiers. Lou is furious with Kid for lying but forgives him when he explains himself.

Back in Rock Creek, Margaret tells them the book has a ripped page, which she was going to use to identify herself to a man who is a Southern sympathizer. Apparently, the man has the schedule for a gold shipment headed to Washington. The South also hopes to steal the gold. Margaret says she is actually working for the Union and that she is only posing as a Southern sympathizer. The riders take the book to Teaspoon and he advises them to go after Saunders.

Kid and Margaret go to Fort Kearney, with the riders shadowing them. but Margaret is killed by Saunders before they even get the copy of gold shipment. Lou offers to pose as Margaret. Kid argues against the plan but is finally convinced. Lou checks in at the hotel as a woman and leaves the book for Mr. Farnsworth. Later that night, she receives a note from Farnsworth asking to meet with her at a certain place. But the note is a hoax left by Saunders and his men. So while the riders are at one place waiting for Lou, and the outlaws to arrive, Saunders and his men are actually at another place. When Lou doesn't arrive, the riders finally backtrack. They arrive just in time to save Lou from Saunders and his men. The copy of the gold shipment schedule is burned by Lou.
