Comments: "This is a literature-based curriculum that uses classics and
many wonderful children's' books such as Mike Mulligan & His Steam Shovel,
Ping, Madeline etc.. It gives lesson plans for science, art, (simple) math,
geography, and language arts. An added bonus for us has been the Five in A Row's
(FIAR) website. Under the archives link, moms who use FIAR write and give
suggestions for supplemental books/ideas/ games/hands-on experiments to use with
the books. I usually check out the website before heading to the library to get
all the suggested books. You can go as little or as deep into the subjects as
you wish during your week-long unit study. We have even continued with some
books for two or three weeks.
When we studied Madeline, for example, we learned about Paris and many monuments
there. We also found France on the map and made a French flag. We had a
chocolate mousse party and invited a couple fellow FIAR'ers over for fun. We
learned a few French words and greeted them at the door. For Bible, there is a
supplemental book called Christian Character Bible Study Supplement that links
the story being studied to biblical truths.
This curriculum is geared toward K - third grade, I believe.
Drawbacks: Very limited math but does show how to apply previously learned math
skills.
This curriculum rocks! I love it."

Note - the following review is from someone who is not a member of a local
support group, but is well-written. I thought it would be worth sharing.

Five in a Row (FIAR)
by Steve and Jane Lambert
======================
Since I was the oldest child in my family, I often read stories to
my little sisters and brother. As a result I have known for years
that children delight in hearing the same storybook again and again.
My little sister Carisa loved the book "The Carrot Seed", and my own
son, John, begged for "No Jumping on the Bed", so often that to this
day Carisa and John (and the rest of their siblings!) can repeat
much of them verbatim. The name of this program comes from the fact
that you read the same story five days in a row. However, with FIAR
you explore different aspects on different days, like this: Social
Studies -- Monday, Language -- Tuesday, Art -- Wednesday, Applied
Math -- Thursday and Science -- Friday.
With FIAR and a math and phonics program, you are all set for a
wonderful preschool. By reading the carefully selected books in the
order listed you will notice that they loosely follow the seasons so
you will be reading "Cranberry Thanksgiving" around Thanksgiving.
However, the books can be read in any order.
I love mother-friendly, multi-level curriculums and FIAR is one of
them. Prep time takes about 20 minutes weekly and then just cuddle
up, read, and do the activities you have chosen from the suggestions.
I am usually very hard to please when it comes to what I fill my
children's heads with. But, FIAR satisfies my criteria for good
literature. I appreciate the Bible Study that goes with this. Here
are applicable verses for each book in the series. This helps my
children to see a story or event and how God's rules apply to our
everyday lives. I highly recommend getting the Bible Study books
and FIAR. FIAR qualifies as a pre-phonics program or a reading
program for parents.
Vols. 1 & 3 $19.95, Vol. 2 $24.95, Bible supplement for Vols. 1-3
$17.95. They also carry Beyond FIARs for older and Before FIARs
for younger children.
