Curriculum name: Pathway Readers & Workbooks
Cost: very cheap
Comments: Pathway Readers and workbooks were designed by the Amish for use in their parochial schools. This series goes from approximately K-grade 8 level. There are 1-3 readers per grade level, and each has an accompanying workbook. The readers are good quality hardbacks which will last through many years and many children. They are extremely inexpensive. (I paid only 10.95CDN for my readers.) The workbooks are only a few dollars each.Pathway begins with a series of workbooks. Listed as "Gr. 1" material, they may be suitable for kindergarteners, as they introduce basic phonics and learning to read principles. "Learning Through Sounds" books 1 & 2; "Helping Yourself;" and, "Before We Read" combine to provide your child a solid introduction to reading. Their methodology is mainly phonics based, but also introduces many sight words. Also available is a large deck of sight word flash cards coordinated to use with the program.Beyond the first series of workbooks lies the heart of Pathway -- the readers. These readers all depict life in a rural, Amish setting. They are filled with moral and interesting stories centering around a particular family that children love to read again and again. While there are workbooks to accompany each reader, many people do not use them. I think this is a shame because the workbooks provide a good, solid foundation for skills in grammar, reading comprehension and writing. Teacher's manuals, which are very helpful, especially in the earlier grades when you are just getting started, are also available for under $10CDN each. The TE's contain each lesson from the workbooks, coordinated with the readers, and give many more ideas for reinforcement of skills.

Comments: "Understanding Writing by Susan Bradick. Covers all grade levels & takes very little preparation time. We use it in addition to our other Unit Study curriculum. I feel like she covers everything I would want my child to learn about writing in bite size chunks."
