Comments: "Last year as a 9th grader my oldest was having trouble with Algebra I using the standard text form from Abeka. I choose to stay with Abeka because I know it is the best math to prepare the boys for a science/math based college major. I decided to switch to the video school. I already had the books, but needed to buy them new again as I had bought the others used. But this year with the other son, abeka gave me a $50 credit for the teachers books. Anyway, one subject is $300 (3 or more subjects is >$950) When you back out the cost of the books I figured out I was spending about $1 day for a private math tutor.

I have home school friends whose children do tutoring at $5 or more an hour. This year we decided to do Biology (which included the lab), Alg I & II, Eng 9 & 10 and Violin. The boys have really liked the in-depth study, the fact that a lot of the work is done on the board in class so not much homework to interfere with basketball & golf, and their PSAT, ACT and Stanford tests all proved that they are getting the stuff. I guess the bottom line is, do you want it to be easy or to make college manageable for our children after we spend 12 years teaching them."

Comments = I have a daughter graduating this year and a son in 10th grade. We have used Abeka for many years. I quit using their language, spelling and vocabulary program in about the 7th grade. We switched to Easy Grammar (for review) and Spelling Power. I felt Abeka went WAY overboard with grammar. Students will never have to diagram a sentence on a SAT test or in college! We just tried to concentrate on their writing skills.

I really like Abeka for science, history and literature. I recommend not getting stressed out about finishing each book. We also did our quizzes open book. My recommendation for most homeschool mom's is to instill in their children a love for learning and then relax. The resouces that God has provided us should be a blessing not a burden.

Our daughter is excited about attending Wheaton College in the fall. ( They told us that they love homeschoolers outside reading lists. ) Keep your kids reading!!!

Comments- "I have been using A Beka Book for 5 years now. I love the content and presenting science and History from a Christian view. My problem is that in the higher grades (4th and up), the history and science are difficult to complete in one school year while completely learning the material. My oldest is in 7th, middle in 4th, and youngest in 1st. The time I have to spend with my youngest makes it difficult to help the older two learn what is required in their difficult subjects. I have heard a lot of good things about Alpha Omega's Switched on Schoolhouse. I am seriously considering to SOS for the history and science to relieve the pressure from both me and my children of the burden we feel from A Beka. I believe a curriculum should be written to expect an average student to complete it successfully in one school year. I don't believe A Beka's history and science are after 3rd grade. Don't get me wrong, I love A Beka over all. But I need to find a way for my boys to enjoy what they're learning instead of feeling overwhelmed and discouraged by their grades."

Comments- "I only use A Beka for math and language this year. They're workbook-intensive, but move quickly from one skill-level to the next. It's good for those students that pick things up quickly."

Comments- " I've used A beka science and history for several years. I like the books because they are very thorough and are from a Christian viewpoint. The books also have lots of pictures to keep it interesting. There are comprehension check questions at the end of a topic and then chapter review questions at the end of the chapter.
The main thing I don't like about A beka, is the busy work. For instance, there are 4 different student books for 7th grade history!!! This can be very overwhelming for the student as well as the parent!!! And if you buy teacher editions for the answers, the cost more than doubles. We recently decided that the info in the text book was sufficient (actually MORE than we need!!). We don't use the other books available....it's just too much work!!!"

Comments: "I have always used A Beka materials as my "fall back/safety net" curriculum. I love that they are Christ-centered and have tests and review sheets available for purchase. I recommend not trying to complete all that they provide--the volume of work can be overwhelming."
