Comments: "The books "Core Knowledge" by E.D. Hirsch were a great starting point in our homeschool adventure. I wish he went beyond the 6th grade. The books cover a lot of different areas which are often overlooked in other curriculums, but I found that he was very basic (ie: "core"), and I supplemented the knowledge with other workbooks."

Comments: "The reason I like this so much is because we mainly do unit studies, but we also read through the appropriate grade level each year in this series, and it reduces my fear that we will leave a tremendous gap in our children's education.  All subjects are touched."

Comments: "As a new homeschooler, E. D.Hirsch's books gave me a backbone to build my curriculum on. They cover every subject, including fine arts and music, at each grade level from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Lesson plans are available over the internet for many of the lessons. The stories in the literature section are presented as synopses of longer Classical books which the child can read to themselves, but we like using them as Read-Aloud's. In grades 3+, I used them as a guide to studying the actual works of literature. Language Arts includes grammar, literature includes poetry and famous speeches, and my son's favorite part is the "familiar sayings" section, where they learn the meaning of many of the sayings we often assume they will learn along the way. The math section is written like a text, and could be used as such with supplemental workbooks (I got some from Educational Wonderland.) Science also reads like a text but needs supplement with experiments, and library books work well with it.
The main reason I like these is because after pulling my child out of school, I didn't know where to start or what to cover. These books gave me the confidence to see where to begin!"

Comments: "I started using these books a few months back and have really enjoyed them. We're using the K and 1st right now, and they give a good overview of several subjects. We use this after we've done the other activities, as a one on one book reading time. I don't do a lot of the hands on activities (there aren't that many) but we enjoy the short clips of info about a variety of things..."
