Comments: I will never use another math program other than Saxon! I was fortunate enough to meet
John Saxon back in the late 1980's and had thought his ideas to be revolutionary at the time. He
was, however, targeting the public school system then. When I decided to homeschool, I researched
many programs and came upon Saxon's website. Joy of joys! I could not believe my luck that they had
created homeschool kits as well!
Saxon uses a spiral approach that includes sufficient review and drill. Too much drill can
destroy a child's interest in math. Not enough drill will leave them frustrated and lacking skills.
Saxon provides a good balance. Saxon's K-3 program is heavily manipulative based. This gives a
child a sense of fun and wonder at math that carries them on into the higher levels. An early
enjoyment of math is often the key to lifelong math success, and Saxon provides just that. Saxon K
is entirely oral based, and therefore excellent for children with little or no reading or writing
skills. This accommodates a wider range of children than other math programs which assume a child's
reading and writing skills are at least rudimentary enough to manage workbooks. Saxon K's gentle and
fun approach does not frustrate a child's emerging skills in reading and writing. Instead, it
encourages critical thinking skills, as well as providing a solid foundation for each subsequent
Saxon level.

Cost: for Saxon Phonics - $60 - $125

Comments: "We used Saxon Phonics K-2. I like the K program. It seems
to make reading fun. By the time you start using 1st and 2nd grade though,
there's just too much busy work. It took about an hour to go through one lesson
in the 2nd grade, and I felt that was too long for learning to read!! It's very
thorough...you'll learn things you've never heard of before and probably will
never use."

Cost: for Saxon Math - $20 - $125

Comments: "We've used Saxon Math for several years. The K-2 grade
material is very hands on. I found it to be helpful with using different object
around the house to do lessons with. However, towards the end of 1st and all of
2nd grade, it seemed to have too much busy work. I used the 5/4 up through
Algebra II. The elementary grades were pretty self explanatory, but the high
school level was a little confusing. The Saxon website has a "help
line" though if you can't figure out the problem. We found a small number
of answers that were incorrect in the answer key. Overall, we've had a pleasant
experience with Saxon."

Comments: "We began Saxon math in first grade, and are now halfway
through. My first grader enjoys the lessons and worksheets, and I love the
meeting portion of the curriculum. The teacher's edition maps out everything you
need to have for the day and what you need to say to teach that day's lesson. My
first grader has progressed quickly in math, so there are a few things that are
not necessary to drill everyday with her, but the daily reminders of all of the
math skills are wonderful, especially for those new to homeschooling and need
guidance. This one's a winner with us!"
