Comments: I've used two of the BF guides. This year, I am using the History of Science. Using literature to introduce famous scientists and their contributions is a great concept. There are also experiments throughout, encouraging the scientific process. A notebook is kept with glossary, maps, drawings, experiment results and any reading other than the read-alouds. For someone who prefers lessons, textbook style, you may be frustrated with this program. My kids enjoy the read-aloud times. There aren't discussion questions in the guide, just a list of suggested activities for each chapter or two you read for each lesson. I found that the suggested two to three lessons per week pushes a bit in time. From Archimedes, Ben Franklin, Guttenberg, and de Vinci, you cover alot of interesting topics. I have to plan ahead for each of my three kids (10, 8, & 6), but feel a 9 & 10 yr. old could do this on his own. When I haven't had time to plan, I read-aloud, get narrations and explore with the experiments (most things you have around the house). If you don't mind the simplified listing of activities vs. a textbook/question orientation, you would like this program.

I have also used the Geography guide and absolutely loved it. My 4th grade boy used it last year and I will attempt it next year with my dd. You get four maps associated with the four books read and do alot of map work with the readings. Great for boys. The content of each book has plenty of extended studies in science, history, drawing, literature. It could be a complete program, in my opinion, if you take the time for the activities suggested. We did not get through "Minn on the Mississippi" which may be a little difficult reading for 4th graders, but could be used as a read-aloud and supplemented with books on the appropriate reading level. You could also use it as their independent reading time and pick and choose activities. A "thumbs up" on this one.

Comments: "Beautiful Feet Early American History - early elementary - I used the Early American History with my second grader and we loved it! He now has a great keepsake notebook filled with all the wonderful things he learned. It was easy to use and the kids looked forward to it. I will use this again with the next set coming up. And may purchase more from BF."

Comments: "Beautiful Feet Early American History - early elementary - I used this for first grade and was very pleased with the broad exposure my child received to historical events.  I elected to use the library for as many books as possible and was able to save myself close to $100 in doing so.  The material was generally interesting to both my 7 and 3 year old and we chose to do the reading assignment during our daily Read Aloud time.  At one point, my 3 year old was able to cite the first president of the U.S. as "George Washington" and was able to recall Betsy Ross's last name, when asked to name the person who made the first American flag, before my first grader could speak the word!  Very effective literature approach to history.  There were some things that we found it necessary to "gear down" for first grade but it was effective nonetheless."
