LOST LEGEND OF "THE CROW'
An old Lumbee Indian man was by the river. He was at the sunset of his life and he, alone, carried the story still of "The Crow." He told it to his granddaughter that day. She lived until the late 1970's and told it to me. Now, I guess the LEGEND OF THE CROW is lost forever. It relates the truth of what happen to the "Lost Colony."
It seems that through the Ages, in all of the Americas, there existed the knowledge of a "White God." And he was the same God of Isaac and Abraham but here in this land. And in times of peril, a crow would be seen by the American natives in many tribes. He would fly to the left of Heaven and suddenly a large vision of the "White God" would appear. Now, The Crow would come to warn of impending dangers such as warriors or bad weather or famine. And, one day, it came to pass that some Colonists were left here and a great Storm would see to their demise surely. And God, the "Crow" to Native Americans, decided to choose a select tribe to save these because he wanted this land to learn of Jesus Christ.
And so, God had to choose what tribe that would be. And he favored the Lumbee. He appeared to them and allowed several members of the Lumbee Tribe, male and female, to be the rescuers of what is now known as the "Lost Colony." They traveled through the woods and by the rivers and came to where the Lost Colony would be. And there, they befriended the colonists, rescuing them before the Great Storm could surely end their lives. The Lumbee took the colonists to the inlet where all saw the crow that day. One of the colonists carved upon a tree the word "CRO AT IN" to tell of the "Crow" at the inlet in a way to be able to leave quickly. He felt if others came, they would learn of the crow also and know God had rescued them. They migrated south and crossed the Cape Fear river, finally ending up in what is now Brunswick County, North Carolina where they remained for over a year.
And seeing the colonists were of white appearance, the Lumbee made the mistake to believe they were as the Crow and Gods. So, they were given gifts and priveleges and allowed to mate with the females of the Lumbee tribe. In time, European diseases began to envelope them all. A tribal council was conducted and the decision made to allow a massacre to deny diseases spread to others. And so, all the European colonists were killed and burried in Brunswick County. near the ocean, with all of their possessions.
Many of the females were pregnant. And they felt it necessary to leave Brunswick County and migrate to the west due to the diseases. So, the Lumbee ended up in Robeson County and those females who had children were trully the first Americans from English decent.
Years later, Europeans found their way to Robeson County and found huts instead of tents, found the Lumbees speaking English, and found some had adopted English names and even had blue eyes as the English do. But, no one would agree that God could be "The Crow." The Colonists objected then and would serverly punish the Lumbees to even suggest the same.
So, history was denied to learn of the "Legend of the Crow." The truth of what happen with the Lost Colony died with a lady of the Lumbee tribe in the 1970's. I met that lady. I was told of the "Crow" by her. And it is interesting to me that if the "Crow" be God, that he chose the Lumbee as his "chosen tribe in the Americas." And yet, Congress cannot allow the same. The lady told me that at the end of time, God would return and the "Legend of the Crow" would be known in that age. But, how could that be? I am the only one to have know. I am the only one who can tell that lady's story. And who even listens? No one.
