The Week of Defenses

The biggest upset of Week 11 in the Global Football League was the smashing victory of the Crown City Thorns over the eastern divisional leader and rival, Screaming Meanies, 85-52. It was only the Meanies fourth loss, but that prevented them from clinching a playoff berth. The Thorns were very hot, with 14 points scored by WR Antonio Freeman, 16 by WR Joey Galloway and 10 by RB Curtis Martin. Although the Meanies had a 17-point performance from rookie RB Warrick Dunn and 11 more by QB Warren Moon, they couldn't reach the Thorns after Sunday Night, when their Steelers Defense put the game away with a 27-point effort. These two teams have now split the season series, and the Thorns (6-5) are now only one game behind the leader of the east Meanies (7-4).

In a very important game for the GFL West Division, the Sao Paulo Travelers came from behind to defeat the New London Wacker Boyz II, 55-34. The Boyz started the game pretty hot, thanks to a perfect coach decision by Edward Haggerty to take out QB Vinny Testaverde (-4 points) just a few hours before game time, and inserting QB Trent Dilfer (11 points). WR Bert Emanuel added 8 points, and they had a big lead early on. But, as the late games started, the Travelers closed in, thanks to RB Eddie George (12 points), but they were still trailing 34-31 after Sunday Night. On Monday, the Boyz had TE Brent Jones going against the Travelers' 49ers defense. Well, the defense came up playing a HUGE game, scoring 24 points and providing more than necessary points for the come from behind victory of the Travelers, who now assume solo first place position in the West at 7-4, only a game ahead of the Boyz (6-5), who are now tied with the Lizards for second place.

The Sao Paulo Big Passaros rebounded strongly, beating the Da Kine Hawaiian, 68-32, after a loss last week to the Travelers. With the win, the Passaros (6-4-1) continue in second place in the GFL East, only half a game behind the Meanies, who they play next week. The Passaros were pleased that WR Tony Martin finally produced some points again (17), while the Cowboys defense also helped a lot (18 points). Only RB Jerome Bettis, with 11 points, and FB Mike Alstott, with 9, played well for the Hawaiian (4-7), who are now officially out of the playoff race.

After three straight losses, The Lounge Lizards finally came out of the struggle by beating the Bloody Sabbaths, 59-42. They needed RB Garrison Hearst, WR Irving Fryar and K Gary Anderson on Monday Night to come from behind to win, but the key for them was the Patriots D on Sunday, scoring 20 points. The Sabbaths (3-7-1) had the early lead thanks to the Jaguars D (20 points) and to Kordell Stewart on Sunday Night (13 points), but the struggle by RB Napoleon Kaufman (-1 point) was really costly. They're now officially with no chances of getting a playoff spot for the championship. The Lizards (6-5) improved their chances, as they're now tied for second in the GFL West with the Boyz, only a game behind the leader Travelers.

And in the last game of the week, the Kauai Rainbows defeated the New York Freaky Fat Cats, 71-43, but that did not avoid their elimination from the playoff race. The Rainbows (4-7) benefited from an amazing 31-point performance by the Denver Broncos Defense, which was the difference in the game. QB Brett Favre and K Jason Elam also played well, scoring 12 points each. As for the Cats (4-5-2), RB Barry Sanders had 9 points and the Packers D added 12, but K Matt Stover was held scoreless by the Steelers on Sunday Night. They still have some chances of grabbing the last wild-card spot, but they'll need a ton of favorable results in the next two weeks, besides, of course, winning the two remaining games.
