Cautious Fuzz

Notes: I'm still pretty happy with the way that city-scape looks. I have to tell you, I'm not really big on architectural drawing, but I wanted to do something to re-establish the fact that this was an alien setting. With comics being what they are, just having weird-looking characters is not enough ... there are too many really great cartoonists telling stories of monstrous (or just bizarre) characters in normal settings. It's important to create a world for the characters to live in ... and that's really not my forte.
When I was taking basic drawing classes the instructor often scattered boxes, mailing tubes, and other items around the room and made us include them in our drawings of the models. More often than not, these shapes took on the feeling of architecture. So I decided to try an experiment with my city here. It is built from shapes that happened to be sitting on or near my desk when I drew this page. There's a bottle of prescription medicine, a ballpoint pen, an air freshener, and a tube of crazy glue in there (and probably more things that I can't recall any longer). The crosshatched background buildings turned out okay ... but I think I'd like the effect better if it was done with flat color or a 40% gray zip-o-tone.
Oh, just so you know, the building on the left side of panel #5 is a real structure I used to pass when I'd walk through NYC. I think it's on 42nd St across from the public library.
Finally, as I look over these pages I'm reminded again and again why it's important to take your time while lettering! In my current work I'm DESPERATELY trying to find a way to do my lettering electronically. (I know how to ... I just don't have my home office set up so that it's at all easy ... I'm working on it, though.)
