CHEATING on Internet Chess Servers:
A MATTER YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF .

Part 4: Naivete and silence are the worst threats to all ICSes.

"I've had a long conversation with Dr. Unclear about cheating on chess networks. (...) He has a lot of knowledge about this area of cheating (using computers to help a player during a game) and is convinced that (...). I'm overwhelmed by the points he mentions -- I'm no techie (...)."
From a well known International GrandMaster

"I was playing this weekend at the Newport Beach Octos tournament and I overheard a few people talking about meeting at such and such person's house to play chess. After talking a while, one person said (while he was smiling the whole time), that this such and such person had two computers. On one of them, he was connected to the internet. And on the other one, he had Fritz running. The guy thought that was funny. One of the other guys commented that it was not allowed, and that he would probably get caught. The first guy said, 'well, you see, he's pretty strong, and he only chooses the moves that are second-best, so it'd be pretty hard for him to get caught'.
So, yes, there's lots of internet chess cheating going on... more than I really thought, and apparently, people are not afraid to talk about it, as if it's really amusing."

pminear(*)(CA) tells you: I absolutely agree with you that cheating is far too prevalent here , I have encountered them in my own playing

"I have great respect for DrUnclear and his uncompromising stance against ICS cheating and have even supported his position in my finger notes for my ICC computer account."
Patrick W. Groves, ChessBase GmbH, September 10th 1999 in rec.games.chess.computer

Many are still unaware, naive or carefree about the whole situation of computer cheating and cheaters on ICSes. Many think they are immune to (C)heaters because they're titled members, think they're strong enough to beat chess playing programs or because they only play r 3 0 games. (The Rebel10 vs Anand blitz games played on July 21st have demonstrated otherwise.) So this time, I'll be crystal clear about a few things. It's possible to cheat in r 3 0 games: it's not that difficult. It's also possible to cheat in bullet/lightning games. I've spotted myself 2 cheaters who were able to cheat in several r 2 1 games. Don't be naive: cheating in a r 3 0 is possible, feasible and in fact probably happens everyday on all ICSes.

Here's a list of ICC members who have taken a position in their finger notes against (C)heating. Just finger them to know more at Internet Chess Club Members :

Bessel(#4), BIGDOGE4(#2-6), Blackwidow(#1), BountyHunter(#4), BusDriver(FM), canadien(#3 & 4), CanBeach(#4 & 10), ChessChess, damo(#2 & 8), Diep(#10), ducksoup (#8), falcon(#3), Ferret(#6), Fitter(#10), Flambe(#5-6), FlyerPgn(#10), FutureFM, HAL9000(#2), helmet(#2), humandroid(#3-6), hyper(#7), Invader(#4), kazantzakis(#5, 6 & 8), Knallo(#9), lambChop(#9), Lonnie (#4 & 8), Magnusson(#9), MrsLovett(#9), Netsurfer(#2), nick1(#6), pawn2pawn(#5-7), Ping-Pawn(#4), Radon(#2), Rapido(#4), Robo-GM(#5), SD(#1-3), Serper(GM)(#7 & 8), UDS(#6), Ukking, Xenon(#7), xypher(#7).

Whether you're a titled member, a strong player, an intermediary player, a chess teacher, a legitimate (C) operator, etc... it's up to you to contribute to a collective control of this community problem. Nothing will happen/change if nobody cares, nobody speaks.
