Finally,
the parade began. I turned around to look behind me, and the entire
50 foot space between our fence and the road was completely filled with
screaming New Yorkers. In front of me, nothing but the wide open
expanse of street. And a grandmother and her granddaughter that I
let in front of me. But they were so much shorter than me that their
presence didn't affect me in any way, except to show that I was obviously
not from New York City.
Not much to tell you about the actual parade, except that it was a great
experience. We "talked" to several players. Here's a
typical example:
*Float comes down the street with El Duque on it*
Us: "El Duque! Yeah, El Duque! El Duque!!!"
El Duque: "Hey, everyone! Go Yankees!"
Us: "Yeah, El Duque!"
El Duque: "Hi Steve! How's life?"
Me: "Good, and you?"
El Duque: "Great! You coming over tonight?"
Me: "You bet, buddy!"
El Duque: "See you then!"
This was pretty much the rule, rather than the exception. However, I
may have misinterpreted a few words due to crowd noise.
Understandable, if not excusable.
The other highlights consisted of the screaming guy behind me who was
incensed to violent rage when Mayor Giuliani ("You better beepin'
keep the Yankees in New York, you beepin' beeper..."), George
Steinbrenner
("Steinbrenner, you beeper, if you don't beepin' keep the beepin'
Yankees in the Bronx, I'll come to your house and..."), and Bernie
Williams ("Bernie, you no good beeper, you better stay with the
Yankees, you money-hungry beeper...") came by.
But it was a lot of fun. We saw pretty much all the players and we
were close enough to both be heard by them and hear them. It was an
amazing experience.
And then it was over.
But this is far from over.
