So there
we were, on the 2:40 train, ready to go back to Milford. The train
started to fill up, and they made an announcement. "This is the
2:40 train to Place X, with stops in Place A, Place B, Place C," and
so on. Guess what place wasn't mentioned? That's right.
Milford. But the other two guys were asleep and I was the only one
who had heard the announcement. And to top it off, I didn't know
what time it was.
"Hey, Mike!," I yelled across the train.
He woke up. "Did you hear that announcement?," I asked.
He shook his head, and right then, they repeated it. He looked
confused, and turned to the man next to him. "Does this train
go to Milford?"
"Nope," the man replied, "but you can catch another train
from Place D. Check with the conductor outside."
Our travel plans did not include buying another train ticket. Eric
was quickly roused. We got off the train, walked over to the
conductor, and Mike asked him about Milford. He confirmed the man's
answer quickly, got on the train, and not thirty seconds later, it
departed. The forces of EVIL had been vanquished. We had
regained the lead.
The correct train turned out to be on the track directly across from the
first. However, it didn't leave until 3:07. We got in and sat
down. As I glanced at my New York Post, an old, toothless black man
wearing a long black overcoat came and sat at the end of my row. He
nodded continuously, as if there was a spring loose inside his skull, and
kept his mouth open in a state of constant awe at the world. With
this friendly gentleman occupying the aisle seat, I put my coat, ticket
and paper in the middle seat and fell asleep.
But my adventures on the 3:07 train to New Haven had just begun.
