Journey to Jersey I: Part Eleven

The drive to the roller rink was without incident, save the inevitable discussions regarding who would sit in the front, and which radio station to listen to. At one point, and I ensure to you I am not making this incident up, one of the girls *actually* said the following to me, verbatim, with no additions.

"Like, I sooooooo did not hear what you just said."

The longer it takes Rose to reach the age of 15, the better. I was informed that I was lucky indeed, for the people I had the privilege of transporting were going to be very famous. Michael, I believe, unless it was Andrew, was going to play football - both linebacker and fullback - in the NFL. When we arrived at the rink, an Eagles representative was waiting with a contract. Christina, on the other hand, was going to go to NYU for performing arts, and become an actress and singer. I told them Mike's secret double wish to be a ballerina and a lion tamer.

The skating rink was by far the worst-smelling place on earth, mixing the natural stench of hundreds of adolescents, the pungent odor of their exposed socks, and the earthy aroma of mud and mildew. At one end were the skates, and at the other was the pizza, and we quickly moved towards the pizza. It was the first time I've ever had Domino's pizza, and also the first time I've ever been given *anything* by an overly enthusiastic man on roller skates who sort of resembled Little Richard.

For the next few hours, Josh, Mike, and I sat on the tables near the pizza, while kids went back and forth between eating and skating. One little kid in particular decided that he didn't want to do either, and sat around making up funny nicknames for us. After the fifth time he used three variants on "Wafflehead," Josh and I picked him up, turned him over, pinned him to the wall, and pocketed the change that fell out of his pants. Mike called it "going St. Peter on him." I only wish I could tell you he left us alone after that.
