We returned at 7:15 AM, and Mike went to his room and Josh to the extra
bedroom, while I crawled onto the couch in the living room for a few hours of sleep. It seemed like only five minutes had passed when I got up at 11 to have something to eat, and go to the Temple-Virginia Tech football game. The night before, we had discussed attending the game, and Mike and I were eager to go. Temple is one of the worst teams in the country, but Virginia Tech will soon be playing for the national championship - and tickets were only $5!
Mike went to check if Josh was going to go or not. Earlier he had expressed some doubt, because he wanted to stay awake for the ride home. When Mike checked on him, his first answer leaned towards a no. Mike said that he would trust Josh with his wife for the afternoon if he didn't want to come, and walked out. Josh almost immediately got out of bed and began preparing to leave. I do not wish to speculate why this comment of Mike's affected him so, but I do know that when we had left the night before and Jill gave Mike a kiss, Josh acted as if he was to receive one as well. Perhaps he was concerned that Mike was not being completely honest in his trust!!
In any case, we had breakfast, and then left a little late, so we had to catch the first ten minutes or so on the radio. Almost immediately, Temple scored a quick touchdown, going ahead 7-0. Virginia Tech had tied the score by the time we arrived, but it still sounded like it might end in a shocking upset, or at least be slightly competitive.
We did not have tickets, and as we arrived, a scruffy-looking black man asked us if we needed three together. Josh and I ignored him, but Mike
said, "What've you got?" I was quite surprised. He told Mike what he had, but the price was too high, so we kept going, oblivious to his calls after us of lower prices. We got up to the main concourse, and another man informed us that the ticket window was closed, but he had "three great seats," all together, for only eight bucks each.
"Eight bucks? No way. It's only five to get in!," Mike told him.
"Okay, okay, man, you got it, five bucks," he answered.
Mike gave him a twenty.
"Can I keep the change?"
"No!"
He counted off five ones, and then held out four.
"I tell you what. Will you let me make one dollar off you? Just one
dollar??"
"Sure. You can keep the dollar."
He handed Mike the change, then turned and walked away very quickly. We proceeded towards the turnstiles with our new tickets. I watched our new friend leave. I watched the security guard by the turnstile. I grew concerned. I moved behind Mike and Josh in line.
