Josh had planned to get up earlier than 8 - I believe that 6 was his goal - to allow for the completion of his Greek take-home test. However, we both got up around 8:05, and he finally just gave up all hope of getting it done before we left. We went down to breakfast (my first time on a weekday all year) and picked up several apples, to provide free sustenance on the trip. Unfortunately, the McIntosh apples were gone, and only the Red Delicious (which is neither) were left. A package had arrived for me from home, with a huge candy bar, and about eight full newspapers to read on the way down. So after cashing my paycheck at the bank, we went back up to Shen, packed up
our bags, and got in Tyler's truck.
It lurched forward unstably past the gym. "Wow. This sure drives like a truck," Josh said. We came to a full and complete stop at the first stop sign. "And the brakes - this'll take some getting used to." After an exciting adventure at the local gas station, where we had to back up and turn around an estimated thirteen times to get on the right side of the gas pumps, we were finally on the way to New Jersey. It was 10:02 AM.
The first step was getting on Rt. 17, the Southern Tier Expressway, an old beaten-down nag of a road, which will soon become the latest interstate highway. Josh wished to take a shortcut, getting on the Angelica exit, rather than the Belmont exit, and had he not continued driving well past the actual exit ramp, it surely would've been a shortcut. As it was, it took him ten minutes of driving past farms and inbred colonies to notice that we had missed the turn.
The rest of the trip down itself was uneventful, save for a large Christmas tree that materialized in the middle of the highway somewhere in Pennsylvania, necessitating immediate evasive maneuvers. We filled the truck up as we neared New Jersey, and pulled into Pedricktown, NJ at about 3:45, well ahead of schedule. After driving past the apartment and then looking confused in the parking lot outside the church, we noticed that Mike's wife, Jill, was standing in the doorway of the lower apartment, inviting us in. We had made it to our destination, but the journey had just begun.
