We entered the stadium and made our way to the reserved seats, moving with Mike at the head of the line, and Josh and I making sure no one escaped to the rear. We were about 30 minutes early, and no one else had arrived in our section. Pregame introductions began, and still no one else in our section. Then, about two minutes into the game, swarms and swarms of people started filing into the rows around us, filling every possible seat. They were late, they were large, they were loud, and they seemed not at all interested in the game.
The game itself seemed to become a blowout, as the Blazers took a sizable lead in the second quarter. The crowd's excitement level peaked during warmups when Allen Iverson was introduced, reaching a height approached again only when the 76ers mascot shot T-shirts into the stands with a giant slingshot. Meanwhile, the people around us amused themselves by switching seats every fifteen seconds, and passing around the one pair of binoculars they brought. In addition, whenever some of our people got up to leave for any reason, their seats at the other end would immediately be taken by confused kids who had been separated from their group.
The Sixers made a valiant comeback in the fourth quarter, but could not come up with the victory, losing 97-91. After the game, we moved everyone down to the bottom, where they listened to a motivational, evangelistic message from some guy whose name I missed because I was too busy trying to talk my way back into our section to pick up the Sixers coat Mike had left underneath his seat. A very nice security guard took me up in the secret elevator and allowed me to jog, not walk, with him through the now empty hall to get back to our seat, where I secured the coat.
After lots of merchandise was given away to everyone except us, we returned to the cars to go to our next destination, the roller skating rink. They all wanted to go to Funscape, but the plan had been made in advance, and roller skating it was. As we entered the parking lot, one of my passengers looked over to Mike and said, "Do we have to stay in the same car we rode over in???" But there was no need for concern.
