When I
awoke from my short nap, the toothless old black gentleman was still
nodding away in the aisle seat. A strange panic came over me
immediately, and I didn't know why. What was I forgetting??
Then I looked over at the seat next to me.
Coat? Check.
New York Post? Check.
Ticket?
No ticket.
I immediately began throwing the coat around, searching in my pockets, and
ruffling through the pages of the Post in a wild search for the
ticket. For without it, I would have to buy a more expensive ticket
on the train, and as you may recall, I had but five dollars to my name.
My frantic searching awoke Eric behind me. He began searching too,
and tried to calm me down, explaining how I could just get another ticket
after we started. I very softly told him, in no uncertain terms, how
that was impossible. My quiet explanation awoke Mike, who was
unmoved by the situation, and went back to sleep.
I eyed the gentleman in my row. He was a seedy character, that much
was true. But would he dare steal my ticket? Eric looked in
between the seats. "I found it," he yelled. But as
he pulled it out, he found it was just an old gum wrapper. The
situation was becoming critical. In a show of good faith, the man in
my row pretended to look in his shopping bag. I checked my pockets
for the fifteenth time.
The PA system squawked, "Last call for the 3:07 train to New
Haven."
