Freshman Room Draw - Part One
"Guarionex: The Wrath of Gary"

by Steve Maxon

Gary (real name: Guarionex) is a Puerto Rican born in the Bronx, but we say he's from Utica - he is - to tick him off.  He got the janitor job for this floor for this semester, but he never does it, preferring rather to sleep all day and play the computer all night.  His GPA last semester was 0.19.  I kid you not.  He roomed this year with a 6'5" basketball player from Tulsa, Oklahoma named Gregg, and they were not a very good match.  However, Gregg and Gary had discussed next year's plans, and agreed to room together again for lack of a better solution.

Enter Jeremy and Tom.  Jeremy is a music major from Carthage and Tom is a sleeping major from Long Island.  Tom really ticked Jeremy off earlier in the semester with his stupid behavior, and Jeremy was anxiously awaiting the time when he could get rid of Tom.  However, as the semester wore on, they began to get along better.  As the day of the room draw approached, Gregg paid his $100 deposit.  Gary paid his $100 deposit.  Jeremy paid his $100 deposit.  Tom did not pay his $100 deposit.

It is now the day of the room draw.  Tom tells Jeremy at about noon that he has not paid his $100 deposit, and does not intend to.  Remember, without both parties' payment, one must wait until the end to choose one's room.  So Jeremy went off upset and wondering whether he should stick with Tom or try to find another roommate. He runs into Gregg.

Back in the times that Jeremy hated Tom, he had discussed the possibility of rooming with Gregg, and Gregg had been agreeable.  So he brought it up again.  They both sort of liked the idea, but neither of them could really bring themselves to come out and tell either Gary or Tom that their services were no longer needed.  On the way to dinner, they talked about their possible future, before an audience of me, Jones, S. Scott, Hubie, Vreeland, and Gary.  When Gary learned of this "backstabbing," as he called it, he made vague threats to their lives.  Well, they weren't all that vague, as he said, and I quote, "You'll be rooming together, all right.....six feet under -- in a coffin!"

At dinner, over the heated words of Gary, they discussed their plans even further.  By the end of the meal, they were almost sure that it was the best thing to do.  Gary was not convinced.  They went to Jeremy's room and waited.  And waited.  And waited.  The time on the clock was 6:10.  The time of the room draw was 7:00.  Tom had yet to arrive. In there with them were me, S. Scott, and Tim Williams.   We helped them out with vague offers of what to say.  I played the guitar while Jeremy rehearsed a song that he might use to inform Tom.  But in the end, he decided against that option.

Tom came in.  I said, "Tim, it's 20 after 6."  He said, "Yeah, it's getting pretty late, Steve."  Jeremy sat on his bed shaking.  Gregg played Nintendo.  S. Scott was on the computer.  After a few other such knowing comments, Tim said, "I think it might be time to go, Steve," and we left.  S. Scott didn't notice and we had to yell for him from the hallway.  We went into the lounge and watched SportsCenter.

A few minutes later, Gregg and Jeremy came in.  They had been dropping hints, but Tom ignored them, electing instead to call his mother on the telephone.  Could everything be lost?  They went back again, only to return a scant five minutes later.  It was now 6:35.  The moment of truth was nearly at hand.  What would it be?  They returned to their room.
