I gleefully ascended the stairs and flung open the door to my room, to find that Josh was not there. His Greek paraphernalia was lying on his desk, and his computer was on, but he had evacuated the room. I checked the lounge and Vreeland's room before tentatively swinging open the door to the bathroom. One stall was in use.
"Josh," I half-asked, my excitement tempered by the bathroom setting.
"Yeah," he replied.
"Is that Josh?" I wanted to be sure.
"Yeah."
"Josh Jones?" In the bathroom, it's always better to be safe.
"Yes!" He was getting a bit impatient with his anonymous questioner.
"Guess what!! Tyler Rinker's letting us use his truck!!"
"Oh. Huh."
This was not the response I was expecting. I went back to the room and awaited his arrival. He questioned the durability and reliability of
Tyler's truck, so I said it had always looked fine to me. And no, I told him, it did not have a standard transmission.
It was now about 1:30 in the morning, and he decided to just forget about finishing the Greek take-home test on time. But first, he told me, "By the way, I'm going to have to be back Saturday night. Nicole's grandfather died yesterday, and she's out of town, so I'm the only one who can drive the van."
His church is about 45 minutes away from the school, and the students who attend it all travel together in a school van, which they rent. One must be 21 years old to drive a school van, and of the members here, only Nicole and Josh have reached that age. She was gone, so he would have to return from an all-night event 350 miles away, only to get up and drive a van to church the next day.
A van which would most likely have only one other person in it.
In retrospect, perhaps I should have asked him to look into finding another way of transportation for the girl who needed a ride - for instance, asking one of the people who had stopped attending regularly to drive. However, my reasoning was hampered by the sheer joy of having found a vehicle - at 1 in the morning the night before the trip.
I went to bed at 2:30 AM, and got up the next day at 8:00, to call Mike to let him know we had a vehicle. The day had come.
