As I approached the lane, I realized that this was one of the few chances I had actually had to singularly determine the outcome of a sporting event. Last year, Ed Keesler, a guard for the California Dreams (my basketball team) had denied me that chance, by taking a 3-point shot when covered - rather than passing to me. I was ready for the challenge now.
The lanes on both sides of us were watching intently. Mike and Josh were holding their breath back at the scoring table. I moved forward, began my backswing, and let the ball go, towards the right side of the lane. It felt good.
Five pins were remaining when I let the ball go.
None stood when it came to rest.
Spare.
5 points.
Final score: 156-153.
The lanes to our left and right erupted in cheers, as I turned around and jumped an amazing distance into the air. I then leapt over the chairs of the scoring table, a difficult and treacherous task in bowling shoes. Mike congratulated me on such an exciting game, and later told me that he expected to win - he can generally use the psychological advantage to come back. But this time, I bowled the game of my life. And actually won.
But now it was past 6 in the morning, and time to return the children to their respective homes.
