First, let me
tell you how incredibly impossible it is to believe that I wrote that
series almost four years ago. Wow.
But although
it seems like it was yesterday, I should add a little bit of explanation
now that the whole story is in the ancient past.
Gary wasn't
nearly as bad as the story might have made him out to look, although there
were odor issues with his room. Due to reasons wholly separate from
the room draw fiasco, he did not return to Houghton for his sophomore
year, although he came back to visit several times, right up until
graduation. I believe Gary is currently working in the office of a
community college, and taking some classes there. I do like Gary. And Tom too. He didn't come back that next year either, but he visited from time to time, and I don't want to make you think he was anything but a great guy. He's graduating this year with a BA in philosophy from SUNY Stony Brook, then he'll pursue an MFA in acting, and eventually, an acting career...
I did room
with Josh the next year, but we got ourselves moved up to third floor, to
be with our RA friend Mike Jordan. That turned out to be one of our
very best decisions, Dave Diaz's gang notwithstanding. We stayed up
there for two years, and then I became the RA on first floor, redeeming
it. Hubie did not transfer, and ended up rooming with my freshman
roommate, Dave. The three of them lived in a house together our
senior year, and then we all graduated from Houghton in May 2001.
Here's a
picture
of the four of us with Jeremy and Mike Vreeland, taken
that day.
Gregg and
Jeremy had a good time in the basement, but the third floor culture was
largely dispersed. Junior year, Jeremy got stuck in a house with
music majors, which he didn't like very much, but senior year, he lived at
Stone House, off-campus, and that more than made up for it. He also
graduated with us, and is a substitute music teacher near home.
Gregg transferred to Oklahoma State in the middle of his junior year, and
will graduate soon. He, like me, plans to go to law school this
fall.
Moisio's time
on first floor was just as painful as we all thought it might be.
One bright spot is that his floor made a swimsuit calendar that year,
which is absolutely one of the single funniest (AND MOST DISTURBING)
things I've ever seen. He also lived in Stone House his senior year.
Ed ended up on
my basketball team the next year, and except for a time when he took a
three-pointer that would have tied the game when he was covered and I was
wide, wide open, we got along very well. Pray that Lawarran (in
training to be a minister in the Salvation Army) never reads this story,
both because I respect him very much and because the man could kill me
with his bare hands.
An interesting
sidenote to the story -- the next year, a rule was created to allow people
to keep the same room without challenge, if they wanted to. If this
rule had been in effect freshman year, we all would have stayed on third
floor -- and that seriously would have changed everything. People's
lives would honestly be different today.
But that's why
God runs things.
