Boye Metal - This shuttle uses a removable bobbin to hold the thread, and has a flat hook for joins. It is
similar to the Susan Bates Metal, but It is shorter and fatter. I actually like it a lot better than the Susan
Bates, it is a better fit in my hand and is much easier to hold. I have found the Boye Metal for as little as $.25 at Wal-mart, and I have
bought about eight of them! I don't know what I will do with them yet, because I probably won't use them all myself. I might start
showing people how to tat and give them away as an introductory offer!
The bobbin reads "Extra Bobbins #3" but I have not found these extra Boye bobbins anywhere.
Here, I substituted the regular boye bobbin #3 with a sewing machine bobbin, #66, by bending the tatting shuttle a bit wider.
It can hold oodles of thread now. It is probably a better idea when using a pearl cotton, because you can see how tangled this size 80 tatting thread got on the huge bobbin, and how could I possibly use it all anyway!
Click to see a size comparison between the Boye and Susan Bates. It's not much, but it makes a difference.
