Shuttle Black Celluloid- I purchased this shuttle on eBay. I don't usually care for old unusable shuttles (I wouldn't use this, it smells!) but I had to have a few oldies in my collection! I was told it is celluloid, so I assume it is. It is some sort of early plastic. I don't really care, and that's the attitude I think is best when dealing with antiques! Less disappointment that way. I think it's a pretty handsome shuttle.

Celluloid was the first synthetic plastic material, developed by the U.S. inventor John Wesley Hyatt in 1869 from a homogeneous colloidal dispersion of cellulose nitrate and camphor. It is a strong, tough, water-resistant material, that allowed for low-cost production of mass-produced consumer goods in a variety of colors. Its flammability led to its replacement by newer synthetic polymers, such as Bakelite.
Shuttle

As you can see, it is in pretty good condition. The tips are touching, and it is perfectly capable of making a tat. I did tat with it a little bit, but the thread was so old that it snapped off.
