Black Celluloid- I purchased this shuttle on eBay. I don't usually care for old unusable
shuttles (I wouldn't use this, it smells!) but I had to have a few oldies in my collection! I was told it is celluloid, so I assume it is. It is some sort of early plastic. I don't really care, and that's the attitude I think is best when dealing with antiques! Less disappointment that way. I think it's a pretty handsome shuttle.Celluloid was the first synthetic plastic material, developed by the U.S. inventor John Wesley Hyatt in 1869 from a homogeneous colloidal dispersion of cellulose nitrate and camphor. It is a strong, tough, water-resistant material, that allowed for low-cost production of mass-produced consumer goods in a variety of colors. Its flammability led to its replacement by newer synthetic polymers, such as Bakelite. ![]() As you can see, it is in pretty good condition. The tips are touching, and it is perfectly capable of making a tat. I did tat with it a little bit, but the thread was so old that it snapped off. | |
