UMAR AL-FAROUQ INVOLVED IN MOLUCCAS UNREST – Umar Al-Farouq is said to have admitted that he is connected to the Al-Qaeda network and that he was involved in several terrorist actions, including bomb assaults in Ambon. Al-Farouq is probably a Kuwait national, who holds identification documents from Ambon. A special combined police-intelligence investigation team confirmed that Al-Farouq and Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, muslim clerc and leader of the muslim organization Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia, know each other. The latter, however, denies this link.

CENTRAL SULAWESI * National and local news reported this week that the Islamist group Laskar Jihad has been dismantled. According to local news reports and the police, the members of Laskar Jihad in Poso have already started leaving for their place of origin. The police confirmed that about 50-60 members left by ship from Palu on Thursday (17 Oct.), while local newspapers reported that over 200 had left. The police have confirmed that it is monitoring both the withdrawal and the members who are still in Poso (see also MALUKU and WEST TIMOR sections).
MALUKU * According to a local press Ambon Ekspress on Saturday (12 Oct.), a staff member from the local Police Headquarters informed that following the Friday 11 October 2002 violent clash among youths of Kailolo and Pelauw villages in Haruku Island, the security apparatus have established control on the situation and secured the area from further confrontation.
NORTH MALUKU * There has been no progress made for the gubernatorial elections. The Provincial DPRD is still waiting for advice from the Central Government.
OTHER * On Saturday (12 Oct.), two powerful bombs exploded near the Sari Club in Bali, causing heavy casualties and extensive property destruction. On Monday (14 Oct.), the Government of Indonesia briefed the Diplomatic Corps and UN Agencies in Jakarta, reporting 490 casualties, with 182 killed and 309 injured, among them 130 seriously injured. As of Wednesday (16 Oct.), the official death toll stands at 183 people.

JAKARTA (Agencies): Laskar Jihad, a Muslim militia group that has sent members to help Muslims battle Christians in the Maluku islands and elsewhere has disbanded and begun withdrawing from the strife-torn region, Wirawan Adnan, the group's lawyer, said on Tuesday.
