The Frasier Directors

Frasier has been directed by many talented writers over the 11 seasons. Here's a list of the directors, together with short biographies plus a list of episodes directed by each director.

Andy Ackerman Rick Beren James Burrows Dan Butler Robert H Egan Scott Ellis Sheldon Epps Pamela Fryman Katy Garretson Joyce Gittlin Kelsey Grammer Gordon Hunt Ken Lamkin David Lee Ken Levine Philip Charles MacKenzie Jeff Melman Alan Myerson Cynthia J Popp Stuart Ross Wil Shriner Jerry Zacks

Andy Ackerman

also directed episodes of Wings, and also worked for Becker, where he directed many episodes of that show. Other show he's directed episodes of include Seinfeld, Suddenly Susan, Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Two and a Half Men.

Rick Beren

has directed one episode of NewsRadio, 2 episodes of Cheers, two episodes of Frasier, and some episodes of Ned and Stacey as well as being a technical co-ordinator on Friends.

  • Director of Episodes 20 and 26

James Burrows

was one of the co-creators of Cheers along with the Charles brothers, Glen and Les. When Frasier began, he was naturally interested in the show and as such directed the first episode and a lot of the first 2 seasons. James is a well known director in sitcoms, he has also directed episodes of Cheers, every episode so far of Will and Grace, episodes of Friends - I think it would be quicker to list the show he's not directed episodes of!

Dan Butler

plays Bulldog in the show and has his own page here. Ironically, Bulldog did not appear in the one episode Dan Butler directed. The episode is currently the only thing he has ever directed.

  • Director of Episode 114

Robert H Egan

was married to Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew from 1982-1993 (the same years Cheers, which Mulgrew once guest starred on, was broadcasting.....). Frasier is the only show he has directed for.

Scott Ellis

has directed episodes of Stacked but mostly concentrates on directing musicals - he has been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as Best Director (Musical) and won once.

Sheldon Epps

made a cameo in Ep 187 "Cranes Go Caribbean" as the Caribbean beach vendor. He also directs and produces episodes of Girlfriends, made by Kelsey Grammer's production company GramNet.

Pamela Fryman

has also directed episodes of The Norm Show, and has directed and produced Just Shoot Me and Two and a Half Men.

  • Director of Episodes

Katy Garretson

has directed episodes of Titus, Girlfriends and Reba, but usually is a second unit director - she has done this for many shows, plus Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Joyce Gittlin

has directed episodes of Suddenly Susan and Becker, and has written for the latter as well as Wings.

  • Director of Episode 89

Kelsey Grammer

plays Frasier in the show and has his own page here. Frasier was the first show he ever directed, and he has also directed the pilot episode for Out of Practise.

Gordon Hunt

is the father of actress Helen Hunt. Besides directing Frasier, he has also directed episodes of Mad About You, Caroline In The City and Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place.

  • Director of Episodes 66 and 93

Ken Lamkin

has also been a cinematographer for many series including Frasier, but also Wings, Friends, The Tony Danza Show and Kristen.

  • Director of Episode 122

David Lee

is one of the co-creators of the show and has his own biography here.

Ken Levine

has been writing with David Isaacs since the late 70's, writing for M*A*S*H, Cheers and other shows. They also co-wrote a few episodes of The Simpsons, Ken Levine even giving his voice in one episode! He also voiced the Announcer in Episode 14 "Can't Buy Me Love" and is the only other person besides David Lee to have both written and directed for Frasier. He's also directed for Just Shoot Me, Dharma and Greg and Becker.

  • Director of Episodes

Philip Charles MacKenzie

also appeared in an early episode of Cheers, playing Roy, the obnoxious tie salesman fiancé of Coach's daughter Lisa. He then turned his eye to directing, eventually directing most of Season 3 of Frasier. Since then he has directed on numerous shows including According to Jim.

Jeff Melman

has also directed episodes of Beverly Hills 90210, Becker, Malcolm in the Middle and Desperate Housewives.

Alan Myerson

directed the 5th Police Academy film, has also directed episodes of Rhoda, Dynasty, Fame!, NewsRadio and Boy Meets World.

  • Director of Episode 37

Cynthia J Popp

was a producer and director on The Bold and the Beautiful, and has also directed Passions.

  • Director of Episodes 213 and 248

Stuart Ross

has only directed one other TV show - one episode of Veronica's Closet. Both star ex-Cheers stars. Co-incidence?

  • Director of Episode 197

Wil Shriner

is part of a showbiz family - his twin brother is Kin Shriner and his father was humourist Herb Shriner. Wil has been acting and directing for many shows and once hosted a spoof talk show in the 1980's.

Jerry Zacks

had small parts in a few films, before switching to directing. He has directed, amongst other things, episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond and Bram and Alice.
